The Story

On October 25, 2015, the Women’s Freedom Conference will center and amplify the unique voices and experiences of underrepresented women who have been disenfranchised beyond gender alone-- women of color whose identities are intersectional and whose womanhood is shaped and defined along those intersections. Last year, three close friends were having a conversation and one raised the idea of hosting an action that would bring together women of color from around the world together in one space. She asked the other two women if they would be interested in working to make it happen and they enthusiastically agreed. Initially conceived as a “freedom march” that would convene thousands of women in one American city, the women later decided that the platform would be more widely accessible to more people if it was a digital conference that could be accessed from anywhere in the world. The mission of the conference is to center Women of Color-- our success, our concerns, our work, our activism, and our existence as vital contributors to making the world a better place. We want to make sure that women of color from around the world have a space to speak out and be heard, to teach others and to learn from each other, and to inform people of the work that they are doing in their respective communities. Our goals include providing practical, real-world information from a diverse group of women, many of whom are actively working to improve the lives of women of color around the world. We want to make this information available to as many people as possible and we believe that utilizing modern technology is the best way to do so. Participants will engage in conversations, seminars, and direct actions focused on the empowerment of women of color by building solidarity and promoting sisterhood.

Your funding will go towards:

  • Compensating speakers and teachers
We believe in paying women for their labor and their time and while the majority of the people working to make this event happen are doing so on a voluntary basis, we are making every effort to compensate as many people involved as possible.
  • Acquiring the technology needed to host the conference online
We want to make sure that we have the best technology to provide the most access to as many people around the world as possible.
  • Renting space for closing Keynote speech, the be streamed live from NYC with live audience
While the majority of the content will be accessible online-only, we want to create a physical space for those who can and want to enter into a space of solidarity.
  • Promotional Materials and Advertising
We want the world to know that this event is happening, so we need to market it as broadly as possible.

The Women’s Freedom Conference is open to all who wish to engage in the conversations and access the content, however, we are limiting the lead organizing, presentations, and speeches to women of color. We ask that people respect the need for this space and support us, amplify us, and encourage us as we work to accomplish our goals.

On behalf of the organizers of the 2015 Women's Freedom Conference would like to thank you for your contributions to our conference. Without you, we would not have been able to make the conference the huge success that it was.
#WFC2015 trended #1 in the United States for 2hrs, 45min
#WFC2015 trended globally, specifically ranking in the top 8 of trending topics in major markets like New York City, Toronto, Washington D.C., San Francisco
#WFC2015 averaged 1,743 tweets per hour
#WFC2015 reached over 117,000 accounts, making over 680,000 impressions
#WFC2015 Registered 1,000 people via official registration service, but we know that many more tuned in (our server crashed TWICE!).
We know that for the first time ever, women of color innovated a new conference design that increased accessibility exponentially, inspired, educated, motivated, and opened the minds of many around the world.
And we have YOU to thank for that.

We are still accepting donations because we truly believe that every single woman involved in this effort should receive compensation. Most of the presenters walked into this giving of themselves, generously, without the expectation of compensation.

We want to do whatever we can to make sure these women are paid something. Their work was INCREDIBLE and their labor went towards a fantastic endeavor.

Thank you to every donor!!
If you wish to receive your T-Shirt (based on your donation), please contact [email protected] with your shirt size and mailing address.

In solidarity,
2015 WFC Team
