The Story

As many of you know, Lisa Sunbury is a RIE instructor, mentor, parent coach, trusted advisor and cherished member of our group who has helped us to foster a generation of confident, authentic people. Now we have an opportunity to help her.

Several months ago Lisa put everything on hold and moved from California to Florida in order to care for Baby R., her infant niece, and is now in the midst of the adoption process. Once the adoption is complete she will then be able to return to her livelihood in California. The adoption proceedings can take seven months to a year. Until then, she is the full-time caregiver for R, as she can only use a mandated state daycare facility for care, which is not an ideal environment for R. This makes it very difficult for her to work, but she is doing what she can from home.

For those unfamiliar with the story of Baby R., she was born to drug addicted parents who wanted her, yet struggled to overcome their challenges and suffering in order to care for her. She was taken into foster care at only two days old, and remained there until she was four months old, when Lisa was able to gain custody of her.

I am asking you, dear parents, to consider what Lisa gives us in time, knowledge and experience and how we now have an opportunity to help her. There are more than 2,000 of us in this group. We can assist her with the cost of plane tickets, legal fees, and incidentals that may arise during this challenging time. Any amount that you are able to donate, no matter how small will help.

This is not just to help Lisa. It's also to help R. who has been living with her for 8 months now. And - if all goes well - will stay with Lisa for good. For this girl Lisa is the best that could have happened to her.  Or as Lisa has put it:

And someday, when she asks questions, I am going to be able to share with her about this group, and all of you- so many people, many of whom I've never even met in person yet, but who have nonetheless reached out, listened, shared, cared, and stepped up to help. The gift you are giving HER is amazing, and I can't thank you all enough.

Thank you Lisa for all of the support and insight you have given to us and others over the years.

Hi Everyone, I just wanted to say thank you again for your ongoing support, and messages of encouragement. It's been a rough couple of months as we've transitioned to our new home, although there has been joy along the way as well, and we have had so much love and support surrounding us here in Santa Cruz. Raina is thriving and growing so fast! Yesterday was her 22 month birhday, and we FINALLY received some good news from FL. We have reached the point in this seemingly never ending process where parental rights have been terminated, and adoption proceedings can begin. I wanted to share with all of you. Warmly, Lisa

We are reopening the fundraiser because I continue to hear news coming from Lisa like this:
Back at urgent care today. R has double ear infection. Medical card arrived, issue date:3/20/14. BUT for some reason benefits not available until April 1. We're good, right? It's April 2. So, doctor's office accepts card. Doctor orders antibiotics. I get to drugstore, and guess what? Medical card rejected. Cost of RX $118.00. Numerous calls ensue to social workers, medicaid office, etc, etc., etc. No answer, or no one who knows the answer. CA says FL responsible. FL says CA responsible. She should be covered under Medicaid, which is a federal program, but someone messed up the paperwork.  I have spent literally 20 hours on the phone and email this week, talking to lawyers, social workers, and benefits office, and NO ONE can help or explain to me what's going on, and why this baby isn't covered. This is the way the State(s) takes care of children. In the meantime, I'm jumping through hoop after hoop to meet their requirements, and prove myself capable of taking care of her. I don't know what to do. I don't know who to call. I am at the mercy of the system just as much as she is. Because I am not her biological or adoptive parent, I am limited in what I can do to advocate for her. All I can do is to keep talking (and I'm yelling at this point), and keep shelling out money for medical bills and prescriptions which I can't afford, and which should be covered. I am working so hard to provide R with everything she needs, but the medical bills alone (for the past 2 months) have cost more than $1,300.00, (which is this month's rent) This is also why we need an overhaul in the foster care system. Because we've GOT to be able to do better by children than this.

can I post this in mindful?
If you have followed this page for over a year, you will know the story, if not I will share it now. Upon finding out that Lisa Sunbury was going through a very difficult time trying to unexpetedly adopt her infant niece when no one else could care for her, a group of RIE parents decided to help her. We rallied around her when she had to uproot her life and move to Florida from California. She did not expect to become a mother at 50, but she did. She did not expect her husband to leave her because of it, but he did. She did not expect to lose her savings in legal fees for an infant, but she did. As a group we decided to help the woman who has helped us become better parents time and time again here on this forum. We have the rare opportunity to get direct advice from a parenting and child development expert who also shares the RIE philosphy with us. We appreciate this and we are paying her back. We started a fundraiser and have raised thousands of dollars to help Lisa fight for R and to finally adopt her. Friday will be the day they move home. Tuesday I got an email from someone on this board asking me how much more she needed to get her home. This person has gone through her own hardships and has been given a hand up. She wanted to pay it forward. So as it stands Lisa’s moving expenses to California have been paid and she can go home and start again without quite as much worry. I would like to thank each and every one of you who has helped make it possible for Lisa to survive and keep R out of the foster care system. We have done it and Lisa is going home! A special Thank you to Penny Elizabeth who came in with the last minute save and sent Lisa some much needed stress relief. Love to you all!
