The Story

Rebecca Vogel was returning to New Hampshire this week from Cornell University when she got into a very serious car accident. The accident involved a semi-truck and she has suffered a traumatic brain injury which needed emergency surgery, and has a crushed vertebra that she had surgery to replace. Her service dog she was training, Kip, was in the car with her, and sadly was lost in the crash. While Becca works to heal her Ivy League brain and overcome her injuries, it is time for us to rise up as well. I know times are tough and you've probably portioned all of your holiday spending out, but let's make sure the Vogels can still have a nice Hanukkah and holiday season too. The first portion of donations will go to sending flowers to the hospital and making sure her family has some basic amenities while staying with Becca in Albany. After that, $1000 will go to Canine Companions for Independence, the service dog organization Becca was training Kip through in his memory. Any additional donations will go the Vogels to help with medical expenses.

You can visit cci.org to learn more about Canine Companions for Independence, or to make additional donations in memory of Kip Vogel. And if there is a way to denote in your donation what you'd like your money to go towards (gifts/food, Kip, or medical expenses) please feel free to do so.

A message from Rob Vogel: "We are over whelmed by the generosity and out pouring of support and don't believe there are words strong enough to show our gratitude."

Becca is doing exceptionally well and is currently at home recouperating. Encouragement can be mailed to her there at: PO Box 55, South Acworth, NH 03607.

Our apologies for getting bogged down in the holiday season and not providing this update sooner. Let's all re-direct our focus back to helping Becca and remembering Kip by trying to get to $15,000 by the end of the week!

Alright. We see how it's going to be, you crazy generous people of the interwebs. We've upped the goal to an INCREDIBLE $20,000 thanks to the insane amount of support we have already drummed up in under a week. Think of how we could help Becca and honor Kip with one month of overwhelming support? I think we just may be able to reach it if we can tap into the competitive nature that I believe resides within each DVM student. So yes, DVM students, particularly those at Cornell, I'm throwing down the gauntlet.

Here is an update from Becca's mom, including her new address for sending cards:

Rebecca has been moved to a step down to ICU this morning which is really good.... but she was frustrated with it at first because it is set up as a "ward" with 8 patients and curtains between the patients.... it is louder and busier than where she was, and she was not comfortable at first. She got a good sleep in this afternoon, and then had a good walk with PT, and a wonderful visit with some of her friends from Cornell - then the First Responder from the accident came to visit her - that was amazing!
Now we are sitting and she is playing with some puzzles. She continues to work on her language -- it will be a work in progress......
We continue to thank everyone for all your support, it means so much to all of us. Thank you so much!

Building D floor 5 Room D558B, Albany Medical Center, 43 New Scotland Avenue, Albany, NY this is an intermediate ICU so no flowers but she can get cards.

Wow! We've already managed to reach our preliminary goal in less than 24 hours! We hear that Becca is making similar progress and her family is hoping she is well enough to have some medical support systems removed today. They have shared with us not only how thankful they are for Becca's resilience, but for the generous outpouring from the community already. Let's show them how generous we really are and raise $5000!
