Early Thursday morning on June 13th, the Benjamin family woke up to a horrific situation; their beloved home of over 30 years was up in flames, crumbling to the ground. Luckily, Jessi, her boyfriend Brian, mother and father all made it out alive. Sons Ryan and Jason were not home at the time. Sadly, the family lost three dogs in the fire who became trapped and died of smoke inhalation.
Jessi's father Ben built their home, but his recent diagnosis of end stage cancer makes it difficult for him to do one of his favorite things; home improvements. The family rummaged through the remains, finding very few things worth saving. It was determined that there is nothing left of the house, meaning it will need to be demolished and rebuilt from the ground up.
The rest of the story is going to seem unbelievable because it really is...
July 22 will mark one year since Jessi received a double-lung transplant, having patiently waited on an organ donation list for 2 years, 2 months and 2 days. She was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at a very young age. She was dual-listed in Boston and Cleveland before receiving the call from Cleveland Clinic and flying across country to accept one of the most priceless gifts – an organ donation and a second chance at life. Jessi is doing fantastic now, but it was a long, hard road to get to this point, months in the ICU that are unrecalled from her perspective, frequent visits to Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital and missing out on many things all twenty-somethings should be able to enjoy. One of the dogs that passed away in the fire was Tucker James. Tucker was Jessi's everything. She got him before her CF took a turn for the worse - he was her companion through it all, never leaving her side and always helping her to pull through in even the worst of times.
For those of you who do not know, Cystic Fibrosis is a recessive gene that is carried by both parents and Jessi's older brother Jason has also has been struggling through the many hard times and obstacles of Cystic Fibrosis. Currently, there is no cure but each year, many of Jessi's family and friends participate in CF fundraisers to help raise money for the cause.
Jessi's mother is one of the strongest people, always working diligently for her family. Jessi's younger brother Ryan helps to contribute with paying the bills and doing house work.
Together they have made it through so much and would never ask for anything from anyone...so let's do it for them. They have always pulled through with the support of each other as well as of friends and family.
If you have anything to spare -- monetary donations, clothing or housing supplies please give to this remarkable family. It will be more than appreciated.
