Hello friends and neighbors,
It is time to fund raise for our lovely friend Albert again! In fact the coffers are running dangerously low for Albert's housing fund ... as of this month we will only be able to contribute for 2 more months. Your donations go into an account which sends $200/month towards Albert's rent and without which Albert would not be able to live in this house. Albert has settled in beautifully to his house and helps out where he can - feeding the cats, taking out the garbage and raking the yard. He still walks the neighborhood daily and keeps up with friends and neighbors new and old.
Please help us to raise some more money. As you may remember from three years ago, your generous donations helped our neighbor Albert to move into a furnished room in a great house only 1 block from his home of 25 years.
Albert loves his new home and is cared for by his lovely landlord who is generous of spirit and also her great cooking. Albert feeds the cats, takes out the garbage and generally makes himself useful about the house wherever he can. As he often tells me, "if you don't keep busy, you die" - excellent advice from an 90 year old man.
If you are looking for a last minute gift for a friend or would like to make a donation in your own name we would be most appreciative!
For those of you not familiar with our neighbor and friend Albert, you will find our original info below.
Thanks again to all of you who help support this long time neighbor and friend.
Our friend and neighbor Albert recently lost his home of 25 years on Shepherd Street NW DC but has found a great furnished room in a house very nearby which allows him to continue his many daily walks and interactions with neighbors.
However, as property values in our neighborhood rapidly increase, rents go up as well. A small furnished room in our neighborhood is now unaffordable for someone on a fixed income - his rent is over 80% of his monthly income!
Other housing options for seniors on a fixed income in DC are very, very limited. Most have wait lists of more than 3 years or are closed until further notice. Spaces that may be available sooner are in neighborhoods that are far from Albert's familiar neighborhood and friends.
For the long term plan we are helping Albert to get on wait lists for good quality assisted living homes - these will be covered by his medicaid and insurance plan. But for now Albert would love to stay in his new house - the owners are lovely and caring and make Albert feel like family.
I have known Albert for 7 years and have talked and laughed with him almost every day for that time. Although his tracheotomy can make it challenging to understand him, he shares his humor through gestures, clicks and smiles. I know him to be a loving and considerate person and I am committed to helping Albert live comfortably through his senior years.
It would make such a difference to the quality of life that Albert will have in his 90's if we can help him to stay local and near to those who care about him! Donations will be held in a bank account and then paid towards Albert's rent at increments of $200 each month, leaving him enough income left over for the cost of living.
If you can afford even $20 that would make a huge difference to keeping Albert at home, and our neighborhood will be much improved for it.
Thanks for your donation! You can contact me with any questions or suggestions you may have and I will get back to you ASAP.
