Asa was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy this January after years of being considered clumsy and awkward.
Duchenne is the most common form of muscular dystrophy in young boys, caused, in his case, by a deletion of exons 6-19 in the dystrophin protein. This is the protein that binds muscle fibers together. When there is a break in this protein, it breaks down faster, causing the muscle to weaken. It is 100% fatal right now (thankfully, new medications for it are in the final stages of research!)
He is 7, and needs a wheelchair for outings now, but our family car is old, and not equipped to carry his power chair. We need a wheelchair accessible van, so we can continue to give him the best life possible, with trips to the zoo, museums, doctors appointments, to see friends and family, all the thing we take for granted.
Please help us raise enough money to purchase a wheelchair accessible van.
