Gus needs our help. He is a sweet, 8 year old American Staffordshire/Sharpei mix (we think), weighs about 72 lbs, is neutered and has mast cell skin cancer.
He was found wandering on the street in Fort Lauderdale, Florida several months ago with a very large tumor dangling from his stomach, struggling to see and unable to comfortably pee or lie down.
I became aware of Gus and my heart went out to this dog. After Animal Control picked him up, we rescued him from a fate that probably would’ve included euthanasia. What we didn’t know at the time, was that Gus had cancer.
A gofundme campaign helped pay for Gus’ vet bills and surgery to remove his tumors (he had several, with that largest one weighing 6 lbs), address his eye issues with a specialist, and a village of wonderful people who love animals and fell in love with Gus, became his inner circle, taking him to follow up vet appointments and showing up for walks and afternoons at their house for a change of scenery for him.
We thought Gus’ cancer had slowed, but after this most recent vet visit, we were told it’s still growing and there are many more of the tumors all over his body. His spleen is enlarged, as is a lymph node that is too far inside to aspirate and test.
An oncologist we trust has recommended chemotherapy and feels surgery isn’t a good option for Gus this time, because there are so many tumors and they will keep growing back.
His specialist appointment, the ultrasound they had to do to see what was going on inside, the second ultrasound they will need to do in 4 weeks to see how much the tumors have grown and whether his spleen is still enlarged, and his complete blood work and medication came to over $1600.00 (this will include the second ultrasound we have to get in 4 weeks).
While Gus has many people who care about him, I have been bearing the financial burden for Gus since around the time of his surgery last February, something I was happy to do when I could afford it, but I no longer can.
Gus needs medicine, high quality food and continued ultrasounds and medical attention to stay alive. And, if we start on chemo, that runs between $3,000 - $4,000 for the course.
I'm asking for your help for Gus, because he can’t. Gus has been through so much already. While we don’t know exactly what his life was like before, we do know someone dumped him in that condition as a senior on his own. And, they cut his ears off, so close to his head. From the way it looks, it was a home done job and could’ve been because they wanted to use Gus for fighting. But, Gus doesn’t have the personality for it. Whatever the particulars were, Gus’ life was probably pretty miserable for years before he was dumped.
He so deserves some time to enjoy life and see that people can be trusted, get adopted and sleep in a bed, snuggled up against his human; to live the good life before he goes.
Because Gus is such a gentle giant and has such an unusual look, he’s become somewhat of a rescue celebrity on Facebook. So, I’m calling on all of you who love Gus, or who love animals to please pitch in and donate whatever you can. Gus’ life depends on it.
