Candia has been an employee with Guana for 13 years. Her infectious smile greets every guest during their stay. Here she shares her experience during Hurricane Irma:
"We were staying in my apartment with my sister and 2-year-old daughter, Noriah, during the Hurricane. The water began pouring into the kitchen, so we ran into the living room. The walls started to crack in the living room, so we ran back to the bedroom and just huddled together, crying. The storm tore the whole roof right off. There was a washing machine outside the house that the storm blew into the middle of the living room. Almost all of my belongings are ruined. After the storm, it took me three days to find my mother because the roads were blocked and I couldn't reach her to see if she was even okay. Thankfully she's fine. With Noriah's school being destroyed, we took her to Dominica to stay with family members there. But then Hurricane Maria hit Dominica. I lost five members of my family, including my aunt. Noriah was not physically hurt, but had another very scary storm experience and is now afraid to be left alone."
Candia and her daughter are back in the BVI and struggling to find a place to live and the means to rebuild their lives. She says, "We appreciate the help of Guana Island's guests, and wouldn't know what to do without the love that they and Guana Island have shown us. It is this love that keeps us going."
Thanks to all who have given to the Relief Fund for Guana Island Employees. Your contributions will help Candia and Noriah, as well as other employees and their families. Please share and encourage others to donate as well. Your support is needed to recover and rebuild during this critical time.
