The Story

On February 20th, Cyclone Winston, the largest cyclone ever recorded in the Southern Hemisphere, waged a path of destruction through the island nation of Fiji.

Over a third of the population felt the full terrifying fury of Cyclone Winston's 300+km/hr winds (see statistics in photos).

The sheer scale of the disaster is overwhelming. Thankfully, Aid and Emergency assistance is starting to pour in from New Zealand, Australia, China, India, USA, and France to name a few.

Aid agencies, Church, Corporate and private groups have mobilized and are attempting to reach out to those areas most affected.

With all this, there is still so much more to be done, and so many more people in scattered pockets across the islands, in desperate need of assistance.

This appeal by the Photographers of Fiji, is to raise funds from its 660+ members, and others who may wish to donate, to directly contribute cash to a list of groups that are making a difference across the nation.

Donations will be equally shared across all the groups in the list every week, for the duration of the appeal.

Bula Supporters!

Donations slowed down a bit this week, though that is to be expected.  The major relief assistance provided by Australia and New Zealand via helicopter drops is making an important impact in hard to reach areas, so we're looking at a transition of focus from groups that supply food/water/medical to other essentials such as shelter and long term food needs on the road to recovery.

We distributed FJD$1,000 to three groups:
  1. Habitat for Humanity ($400)
  2. Save the Children Fiji ($300)
  3. Rise Beyond the Reef ($300)

Thank you for all the help you've given to the groups and the people affected.

God Bless!

Our first round of donations went to 4 organisations today!  Each of them received FJD$500 to go towards their cyclone assistance efforts.

The organisations/groups were:
  1. Sea Mercy
  2. Fiji Red Cross
  3. Global Compassion
  4. Rotoract / Rotary Club of Lautoka

Here is an example of the great work they are doing right now.

Sea Mercy:headed to Narai an island in the Lomaviti Group with over 300 people directly hit who are still haven't received supplies or aid since last Saturday.

Global Compassion: have delivered relief supplies to many of the hardest hit outer island areas, including Koro, Ovalau, Yacata, and Vanua Levu.

Rotoract / Rotary Club of Lautoka: their enthusiastic young volunteers have been delivering medical, food and essentials supplies through the Ba to Ra area.

We're adding a list of new donor groups for fund distribution very soon.

Vinaka vaka Levu!

Early estimates of houses damaged and destroyed include:
  • Koro: 100% of houses destroyed
  • Taveuni: 26% of houses destroyed, 25.9% damaged (total 52.3%)
  • Savusavu: 33% of houses destroyed, 11.4% damaged (total 44.5%)
  • Tavua: 16.3% of houses destroyed, 51.4% damaged (total 67.7%)
  • Ba: 6.8% of houses destroyed, 22.1% damaged (total 28.9%)
You can see the full report here.

If you haven't already done so, please share our fundraiser so we can get as much help as possible to those on the ground making a difference.
