The Story

My name is Gordon Dymowski....and I'm a freelance social media consultant as well as a writer/blogger.

Over the past few months, my mother?#39;s health has been a bit precarious - she had a liver transplant in 2009, and recently had a pacemaker installed. For the past few months, she's been in and out of the hospital for a variety of reasons...and although she has other supportive care, that's meant that I've had to take on more responsibility.

As a result, my workload has decreased (despite some really good short-term clients), and I'm falling behind on the rent and other bills. (Ironically, several supportive services like rental assistance are not available to me due to the nature of my freelance work).

In short, I'm in a crisis, and I'm asking for help. Those who know me well know that I'm more than happy to assist when I can....I'm only hoping that you can return the favor.

My financial goal is to pay off back rent, as well as have a little extra money to pay off some smaller debts. I'm not doing this to avoid work (I'm scrambling to find some well-paying assignments, and have been lucky to get some smaller work come through). I'm in a precarious situation, and my options are limited.

If you can't donate but would like to help, I ask two things: first, forward this via social media and two, if you know a company that could use my services, send them to either my LinkedIn page or my website.

Also, prayers/well wishes/good vibes are always appreciated.

Fundraiser Updates

This will, most likely, be my final update for this page, mostly because things are changing in a very positive way.

My mother is currently in structured rehab to rebuild her strength after several falls. She's also recovering from a foot infection, and so she will not be home for awhile. So I'm in the process of putting my things in storage and house/cat sitting for her for several months.

I've also had a second interview for a position that is looking *very* hopeful. Right now, I'm turning it over and whatever happens, will happen.

Although I still owe back rent (and my landlord knows about me moving), I'm in a much better place where I can easily make payments on it.  Right now, my only concern is help moving for this Saturday....but that will come through.

This has been a unique experience....first, learning how to ask for help without feeling shame. Secondly, realizing that many people my age (and in some cases, their families) are moving back to live/care for aging parents. But the third, most important lesson, is that change comes in rather unexpected forms.

I'm really looking forward to moving forward - before setting this page up, my options would have been either being evicted or homeless. Now, I have opportunities - I'm donating a lot of my furniture/possessions to charity (although I will still have quite a bit to be stored), and my focus is keeping my things in storage while working, house sitting and building up enough to move into a new, smaller apartment.

(Plus, I'm really enjoying getting to know Mom's cat Pascha)

So for those of you who supported - thanks! You were an immense help, and I am forever grateful.

And I move forward in confidence rather than fear. And that's the best lesson I've learned from this experience.

First, a bit of good news - I was able to pay off a good chunk of my back rent thanks to your donations. However...

I still owe about $1500. Landlord gave me another 5-day notice. I'm looking towards other programs and financial assistance, so I'm asking that if you've already given, please feel free to forward this update.

Luckily, he's understanding and patient, but we *all* have our breaking point. I'm also grateful that Tuesday, I have a second interview for a really promising position. It looks like a really good fit (and I'm going to have to prepare this weekend), and so your continued thoughts and prayers are appreciated.

I continue to be grateful for being friends with an incredible group of people. I am simply humbled.

Thanks for letting me share.

Feeling much better, despite some recent crises....

First, I received another five-day notice from my landlord. Spoke to him on the phone - he's willing to take a partial payment within next few days.

Thankfully, an anonymous donor (and I thank you from the bottom of my heart) gave a large much so that I can make a good partial payment. I've also reached out to Catholic Charities because 1) there's always the chance that I could lose the apartment anyway, and 2) I need to start thinking longer-term about caring for Mom and myself.

Today's agenda - visit Mom. Prep for an interview on Monday. Check out a great Doctor Who lecture by a friend. And head back to my place and get some sleep. (Luckily, I managed to catch up late yesterday....while watching a movie. So I'm watching what I missed this morning).

Finally, just a reminder - I'm always seeking paid work as a freelancer and full-timer. If you can, please feel free to help me make connections by forwarding either my LinkedIn Profile or my professional services page. (Because I'm going to have to start planning long term and quite honestly...

If I want to avoid this kind of dramatic change again, I need to start taking positive steps. And that means asking for different kinds of help.

Thanks again. Despite everything, I'm really grateful to know that I have such great friends and allies in my life.
