Caitlin McCarthy is a 15 year old from Walpole, MA, has a diagnosis of Rett Syndrome (a neurological disease) and Mitochondrial Disease. Here is a short list of what Caitlin endures on a daily basis: a permanent TPN line, a G-Tube, a J-Tube, seizures, renal disease from extremely high blood pressure, oxygen with a bipap ventilator at night. Confined to a wheelchair, Caitlin relies on multiple medications daily and 24hr nursing care. Since Caitlin is non-verbal, she can't even tell us what is wrong or what hurts.
The puppy is a very healthy, fuzzy 6 week old Golden Retriever who will be raised and trained to be a service dog for Caitlin. Golden Opportunities for Independence in Walpole, MA, (www.gofidog.org) a non-profit (EIN#47-2354183) is providing the puppy and the fuzzy friend will be individually trained to meet Caitlin's specific needs. The puppy will have up to two years of training to be a service dog and will also be trained to recognize Caitlin's seizures. The puppy will be able to alert Caitlin's family and nurses to impending seizures but also lie next to Caitlin during seizures to prevent injury. Training also includes retrieving objects and help with Caitlin's high blood pressure by being a calming influence during her many stressful treatments and hospital stays.
Two years of highly specialized training of service dogs is quite expensive. That's where you come in! Any amount, large or small, will make a huge difference and bring Caitlin and the puppy one paw print closer together! Because all money raised will go directly to Golden Opportunities for Independence for Caitlin's specific puppy, your donation is tax deductible! And don't forget to check with your employer for a matching donation program.
Aside from service duties, the puppy will provide Caitlin with support, companionship, friendship and love. Caitlin's brothers, Matthew (20) and Danny (16) are looking forward to the adoption and the joy that only puppy love can bring to a family!
