#STEAMtheBlock Global Education Exchange Coalition with South Africa (July 14 – 24, 2018)
The Swaliga Foundation from the Washington, DC area has hosted the #STEAMtheBlock Global Education Exchange event in Johannesburg, South Africa in both 2016 and 2017 with about 18 students / adults. We have now expanded the event to some partnering educational organizations from Houston, TX, Los Angeles, CA and Nashville, TN for the 2018 10-day event.
On a grandeur note, this year’s event will be during Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday celebration and we have a total of 74 people (students, parents, instructors) planning to attend.
Will you help us be successful in “” and make the educational exchange?
We really need your financial support!!!
Purpose and Overview:
Most often, scheduling, “finances” and even fear make it difficult for minority students to participate in a study-abroad experience. Yet, cultural immersion is vitally important to enhance a student’s knowledge and perspective of the world. Especially when an American disadvantaged student can transfer / exchange knowledge learned in the United States with students / adults that could use that knowledge to live better.
The Swaliga Foundation’s vision has allowed the 3 organizations of the South Union CDC (The STEM Foundation), Nashville, Tennessee (From the Heart International Education Foundation), and Los Angeles (Village Health Foundation) to add thier unique components to make a much more significient impact. We will join the Johannesburg non-government organization of Word Liver Foundation with 3 universities engaged in this exchange project to include Tennessee State University, University of Johannesburg and Vaal University of Technology.
Together we will engage over 1,000 students and people in:
1. Thinking globally
2. Engage in meaningful dialog
3. Participate in interactive workshops of exchange on:
A. STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math)
B. Leadership and Service Learning sharing
D. Health & Wellness
What You Are Funding?
Our objective is to make this 10-day Service Learning and Exchange field trip a memorable experience for all attendees. (Both student, parent, teacher and community worker) First we need to ease the financial burden that is weighting us down from doing this great work.
Each donation will serve as sponsorship support for that are putting in sweat-labor towards individually raising their own $500 towards a total cost of right at $2,040.
Your support will pay for the following:
1. Airline tickets that are right at $1,400 roundtrip
2. Hotel expenses right at $30 nightly for 9 nights - $270
3. Three "fun" excursions like the safari right at $40 each - $120
4. Food for the 10 days of the trip at around $25 per day - $250
After each student raises their $500, they will need about $1,540 to complete their expenses.
Additional funding will go towards:
The Service Learning project for the trip will be an exchange of learning about the making of Solar Lamps that The STEM Foundation students learned for their Solar “Outdoor” Classroom. The students will actually facilitate the workshop in teaching the South African students / parents how to build 100 Solar Lamps. (They will also expound on the importance of sustaining the lighting, as well as, sharing some entrepreneurial opportunities that may arise from the workshop)
We will need around $3,000 to make the 100 Solar Lamps.
