The Story

After volunteering for over 15 years of my life with the Mateel and other non-profit organizations, I find myself faced with the threat of my own assets being seized.  It feels so unjust!

Apparently, back in 2014, shortly before that years Reggae I signed what I thought was a trailer lease agreement.  Buried in the fine print, it was also a promissory note to personally cover any debt that the Mateel could not cover from Sysco indefinitely.  I certainly would never have signed such a document if I had known what  was concealed. However, I accept responsibility for overlooking the fine print, being rushed in the moment.

After seeking legal counsel, I determined that the high cost of a legal battle, with an uncertain outcome, would have still leave the Mateel with a lien against it’s assets. A lien would prevent any chance of a loan to consolidate debt.

Forced by these circumstances, I used 30k of a fund set up for my family’s land and turned it over to the corporate giant.  Fellow Board members came forth to cover the other 11k. As a small business owner, making only a modest living from my Computer Sales and Service shop, I cannot afford to part with that amount of money for very long.

I’m asking for help.  Make Donations here or you can deposit funds at the Credit Union account: Garth vs Goliath # 13597-54

I hope you can find it in your hearts to donate to this fundraiser. Any amount is appreciated and will go directly towards paying back my debt.

It's been awhile since I posted an update on this fundraiser.
As many of you know Sysco agreed to refund $9222.73 in interest and fees.  This has gone directly to help pay me back.  Currently through generous community members and this refund I have raised close to 20k.  Thanks so much for all the kind words and support!
Please share this fundraiser I'm hopeful to be able recover all of my family funds that were used to Pay Sysco and avoid legal actions.

I have to say, it's felt really good having so many people chip in and support me in these rough economic times.
Not only the monetary donations, but the kind words and supportive attitudes go a long ways!
Once the Mateel gets the partial refund check from Sysco, that will put this fundraiser at around 19k, almost halfway there.
I hope folks can continue to share this on social media and through word of mouth.

I'm happy to let folks know that Sysco is refunding most of the interest and collection fees on the original bill.
Hopefully this week I'll see a check for $9,222.   This will greatly help me in my efforts to regain my family fund.
Big ups to our local Sysco rep Scott who was very helpful in making that happen. I'm glad that Sysco realized they were dealing with a non-profit organization and had the kindness of hart to refund the fees.
Much love to all of you who supported me with kinds words and monetary donations!
Please continue to share this fundraiser and support when you can.

--- press release from the Mateel ---
The Mateel Community Center Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the Sysco Corporation has agreed to return the balance of the interest and fees that the Community Center owed as part of their 2017 Reggae bill. The interest and fees come to approximately $9,222. The $30,560 bill has been paid by Garth Epling and several other lenders, so as to avoid a lien on the Mateel property and Garth’s personal property. Such a lien could have prevented the Center from acquiring a loan on the property, which is something the current board of directors is considering as part of their plan to alleviate the heavy load of debt after last year’s Reggae on the River festival.

It is gratifying that Sysco realized that our local non-profit community center is deserving of a helping hand. We would like to take this opportunity to say that the trailer rental from Sysco was free of charge every year; they did not endeavor to “trick” us at any point; and they did offer a payment plan to the Mateel, but unfortunately the Community Center was in such a position that we could not afford the minimum payment. We are happy to be on the road to a resolution and anticipate that with the community’s help, we can continue to improve the future of the Mateel Community Center. We appreciate your support and feedback. We continue to believe that our Community Center is a vital part of our quality of life, and look forward to happier days ahead.
