The Story

“This will be our legacy as a school, a community, and a family!” Gale Principal Emuwa

CVS corp. through GINN Consulting is awarding a $150,000 match grant to build a SMART clinic at Gale Community Academy. Beyond medical resources, SMART clinics bring targeted medical and social-emotional support structures to young people that need them, using a relatively new model that is proving incredibly effective for at risk and medically fragile populations. It is a potential game changing development for our neighborhood school.

It’s an 'all hands on deck' moment for our community, another $103,000 is needed by April 1st, 2018, a one time expense that will open the doors to both the clinic and the revenue streams needed to operate it for years to come.

More than 36 languages are spoken at Gale Community Academy, and over 97% of students are from low income families. Some are medically fragile young people from local assisted living facilities whose hope for education rests entirely with Gale's ability to provide it.  SMART clinics have already resulted in over 30,000 additional school days attended in the four schools in which they have been implemented. Suspensions have been reduced by an incredible 92%. The estimated value/return on investment per dollar is $52.00 per every dollar spent at the flagship location.

Simply put, SMART works. With your help it can work for the kids at Gale Community Academy.

Loyola Universityannounced today it is donating $25,000to support the construction of a SMART Health and Wellness Clinicat Gale  Academy.  Loyola’s Acting Provost and Chief Academic Officer, Margaret Faut Callahan, presented the check to Gale Academy Principal Augustine “Augie” Emuwatoday at Loyola’s Water Tower Campus.T his  generous one-time grant allows Gale to immediately begin construction  of the clinic, which the school hopes to open in time for the beginning  of the academic year in September

Loyola’s donation helped begin construction of the clinic, but we are  still short of our goal to enable the SMART model to be fully  implemented. If you haven’t yet done so, I urge you to make a donationto  help make the Gale SMART health clinic completely operational, so that  all Gale’s students can take full advantage of its services.

“Everyone sees me as perfect. I’m involved in extra-curricular activities. I’m a leader. My grades were always great but were starting to slip. Before I was asked to come to the clinic for my health screening, no one thought I had a care in the world. My parents, friends, and teachers … thought I missed school because I was sick, not because I couldn’t force myself to get out of bed that day or was overwhelmed with a fear that I wasn’t good enough. Now, I have a support system. Because of the SMART clinic, I participate in group (therapy), share with my social worker and open up more with those closest to me. I even learned to meditate to help reduce my anxiety before a big test or presentation. My grades have bounced back, and I’m excited about my future.”  Honor Student at Sullivan High School where a SMART health clinic is operating.
