Have you heard the news? MAMA's Club is coming to South Main Street, downtown Gainesville.
The name says it all:
Music! Blues. Jazz. R&B. Hip-Hop. Punk Rock. Gospel. Classical.
Art! Street Art. Fine Art. Mural Art. Graffiti Art.
Movement! Dance. Massage. Classes.
Action! Political. Economic. Education.
MAMA's Club will be located at 435 S. Main Street next to the Civic Media Center. We need our communities to invest in the space and help it come together. Let's imagine the beautiful possibilities: Taking a friend out to enjoy live jazz music on a Friday night. Checking out a new dance class on Saturday afternoon. Meeting with fellow organizers to make plans over a community meal. Enjoying a class on African American History on a Tuesday night. Seeing a live art demo and chatting with the artist about their work. Maybe you lead one of these things or perform? The possibilities are endless with this kind of community space.
Faye Williams, founder of MAMA's Club, is from Gainesville and grew up in the Porters Community. She was a co-owner of the prominent store Sisterspace and Books in Washington, DC. Sisterspace was a hub for conversation and learning. Faye fought gentrification for years until her store was finally closed in 2004. As soon as Faye returned to Gainesville, she hit the ground running working hard to organize around many important Gainesville issues.
MAMA's Club is a community place to jam, listen, learn, teach and act. It is a place to bear witness for our past, present and future endeavors. MAMA's Club is an inclusive space, open to all folks, all thoughts and ready for progressive actions... Now is the time to get on the freedom train! Let's open the doors to MAMA's Club and bring black-own businesses back to S. Main St.
