On a modest parcel of land in the center of an urban area, over 700 volunteers of all ages, ethnicities, and income levels gather to build a healthier community. It is a communal farm where over two tons of fruits, herbs and vegetables are harvested annually, then donated back to the volunteers and to hunger relief charities.
This thriving and socially responsible place is Fairgate Farm, in the heart of Vita Health & Wellness District in the West Side neighborhood of Stamford, Connecticut.
The Farm hosts gardening and health classes, seasonal events, cooking demonstrations, and an ongoing composting initiative that has diverted over 5,000 pounds of food waste from landfills. Fairgate Farm also provides nutrition and outreach programs to neighborhood children, youth and adults. Through hands-on gardening and education opportunities, the Farm is building demand for fresh, organic produce as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle.
In order to expand Farm programs, we need to build a shaded structure – a grape arbor, or “pergola” - where kids, seniors, and other local residents can mingle while enjoying the outdoors and appreciating the rich, cultural diversity of the historic West Side neighborhood.
That’s why we need you. Our volunteers are ready to build the pergola, but we need funding for the materials and resources. The Anthony Pellicci Pergola will be named in memory of this iconic community member who was dedicated to invigorating the neighborhood where his restaurant has welcomed countless regulars, new arrivals and a few famous celebrities for seventy years.
Local architects and contractors have agreed to donate the design and labor for the construction in a show of support for Pellicci and the community values for which he worked so tirelessly. Please help us improve the Farm so inner-city families, area residents, and nonprofit organizations like food pantries, soup kitchens and homeless shelters can enjoy locally-grown, organic produce for healthier living.
Every dollar you donate is tax deductible. No amount is too small. Together we can make a difference and take pride in being part of a culture that promotes healthy living, especially for the people who need it most. We need to raise $15,000 within 90 days to make this project come to life. Once we reach our fundraising goal, we will immediately begin construction. We plan on hosting a community ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the new pergola during our Fairgate Farm Jam in spring 2018. We thank you for any donation and for being a part of the dream, and a driving force, to build a healthy community at Fairgate Farm.
