The Story

Russell Hinson drew his last breath in the early hours of Saturday, March 12th in the arms of his wife of almost 13 years - Erin McKinney Hinson.  He was able to say goodbye and hug his three young children - Poppy, Charlie (9-year-old twins), and Mary Hazel (5) before passing away.

Russell suffered through a long, difficult journey with a debilitating medical condition that left him in daily pain.  But his life was not defined by the illness that took him from his family.  Russell had a dry, quiet humor and a twinkle to go with his warm smile.  In earlier years, he and Erin enjoyed century bike races together and hiked to the top of a volcano and a glacier.  Russell had an encyclopedic memory, a philosopher’s curiosity, and a vivid imagination.  His storyteller's soul spun magical tales into bedtime stories for his children every night.

While Erin, Charlie, Poppy, and Mary Hazel are left to mourn the loss of husband and father, we who love and support them would like to contribute something to ease their burdens in the coming months and years.  The funeral and permanent loss of family income alone would be difficult for any family to bear.  This site gives each of us the chance to show this family we love that we are walking with them, side by side.  With the exception of the 3% card processing fee associated with any payment processing site, every dollar will go to the Two Possums and a Bug Memorial Fund, which will be in Erin's hands to care for her children.  Thank you sincerely for your love and support.

Erin is not one to seek out the spotlight.  If you praise her strength and grace under pressure, she will deflect, and tell you that she is only doing what anyone would do.  She will turn the tables and shine the light right back at you, praising all of the goodness in you, not wanting the attention for herself.  She would not want me to write these words, but I’ll do it anyway this once.  Erin is goodness and kindness and generosity, all wrapped into a package of ferocious strength and loyalty and love.  Instead of giving into the despair of a difficult situation, Erin reaches out and gives of herself to make someone else’s day a degree or two or ten better.
Many of you who know Erin will remember another terrifying chapter a few years ago when she learned that her one-year-old baby girl would lose a kidney to remove the large tumor that was found at her 12 month checkup.  Instead of retreating into a place of fear, or wringing hands and drowning in the unfairness of it all, Erin chose to reach out and start a campaign of giving, reaching out to strangers or loved ones every day, surprising people all around her with random acts of kindness.  She documented each day of this 40-day experiment on her blog, and we followed along, inspired by her ability to act - replacing fear and helplessness with far-reaching goodwill.  I believe that Karma is real, and Erin has been sowing the seeds of generosity and love for so long… now is the time for all of that love to come flooding back to her.  Thank you sincerely for contributing to the flood of love that we hope she is feeling from her village today.
