K9 Bronco has had a distinguished career with the Chandler Police Department as a dual purpose, Patrol and Narcotics police dog for over 5 years of service. Bronco was imported from the Netherlands and was purchased by the Chandler Police Department in 2012. Bronco worked patrol with two different handlers, both of whom appreciated his loyalty and tenacity. During his career Bronco has located large quantities of narcotics, numerous apprehensions of suspects, and uncovered many crucial pieces of evidence during article searches.
One of K9 Bronco’s major accomplishments was finding a weapon used in a homicide, discarded by the suspect as he fled on foot from the victim’s home. More than a dozen officers searched the neighborhood looking for the handgun, to no avail. K9 Bronco was called in to assist in the search and located the handgun in a short period of time, solidifying the case against the suspect. Bronco has earned the respect of his handler and fellow officers, and will always be remembered as a devoted partner willing to put his life on the line for his handler and citizens.
Unexpectedly, at 4:00 am on October 24th 2017, Bronco had a massive seizure in his kennel at home. 12 more excruciating seizures followed in the short time before he was rushed to a veterinarian. Bronco’s vet, who specializes in working dogs, was able to get the seizures under control before Bronco was rushed to the Animal Neurology & Imaging Center for an emergency MRI scan. The MRI determined Bronco had a tumor on the frontal lobe of his brain. Bronco was next seen by a Veterinary Oncologist; reference a treatment plan using a new state of the art Stereotactic Radiotherapy. The treatment plan is a weeklong and very expensive. Bronco’s prognosis looks great with treatment. Bronco was subsequently forced into retirement, and into the care of Officer Berner, his handler. As a result, a fund-raiser is underway to ensure Bronco receives lifesaving care which will allow him to resume a normal and active life in retirement.
Back The Blue Pet Rescue (BTBPR) is determined to help Bronco with his needs. BTBPR is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in Arizona that is dedicated to rescuing abused, neglected and abandoned animals. We strive to find them forever homes and reduce euthanasia. BTBPR also assists Arizona’s retired public safety K-9’s with medical needs by assisting their handlers with costs associated with treatment. Our goal is to eliminate the burden for Bronco’s handler, Eric Berner, by assisting financially so Eric can focus on being with Bronco during this difficult time.
Please help us help K-9 Bronco by giving him the best chance of survival so he can live out the rest of his life enjoying retirement.
