All kids need a place where they can "just be kids". This is even more so the case for a young person with epilepsy. For a lot of children with epilepsy, each day holds uncertainty, limitations, and fear. That is why the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigandeveloped Camp Discovery. We wanted to create a safe place where kids can enjoy the full camp experience: swimming, rock-climbing, horse-back riding, archery and more. Camp Discoverychanges lives.
Epilepsy is a spectrum disorder. Some children with epilepsy suffer from frequent seizures, medication side effects, cognitive difficulties, depression, anxiety, social stigma and isolation, and other physical or neurological disabilities. Others may have full seizure control but still worry about stigma or the possibility of a seizure. Camp Discovery offers a safe camping experience that promotes healthy behaviors, builds self-esteem, develops social skills and independence, and allows campers to discover their own abilities.
However, as you can imagine, this is a very costly endeavor. Camp Discovery is a five day/four night camp experience specifically designed for children ages 8-17 who have epilepsy. With 24-hour medical staffing (including a pediatric neurologist and epilepsy nurse specialist), a camp staff that is fully trained in seizure recognition and first aid, and a high staff-to-camper ratio, Camp Discovery offers an exceptional level of safety, experience, and responsiveness. This allows us to accommodate the entire spectrum of epilepsy.
This is why we need your support. It has always been our goal to offer this experience regardless of a camper's ability to pay. Your support will allow us to provide substantial financial assistance to families who cannot afford the full camp fee. Your gift WILL change the lives of young people with epilepsy. Please donate today.
If you'd prefer to mail a check, we can still post the donation here! Simply, make it out to the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan (include a notation that it's for Camp Discovery) and mail it to:
