AWAKENING: MOTION - MAY 2018
AWAKENING: MOTION is a series of public art projects that aims to transform the streets of Charleston’s Upper Peninsula by showcasing what’s possible when communities unite to create safe, connected, dignified transportation.
Charleston has a transportation problem. More than 30 people are moving to the city everyday and with them come automobiles. A whopping 76% of Charleston drives to work alone instead of carpooling, which overwhelms the roadways and leads to increased levels of traffic and pollution.
Due to decaying sidewalks and a lack of bike lanes on the Peninsula, Charleston has tragically become one of the top 15 cities in the U.S. for bike and pedestrian fatalities. Enough Pie, a non-profit that uses creativity to connect and empower our community, has assembled a team of artists, public agency officials, organizations and thought leaders to shine a light on the need to make transportation safer, more accessible and more affordable through public art and events from April 28 through May 31, 2018 for AWAKENING: MOTION.
