The Story

The Paulsons have helped so many in the childhood cancer world over the past 4+ years. Now it is our turn to help them.
At just 16 years old, on January 17, 2012, the lovely Emma Rose was diagnosed with Very High Risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). After heroically enduring 2½ years of intense chemotherapy, her family was confident that she was completely and forever cured. Emma completed treatment, graduated high school and began her studies as a nursing student at her beloved St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN. She was successfully pursing her dream to become a pediatric oncology nurse, and to hopefully one day work alongside the nurses who saved her life at Children’s Hospital of WI’s MACC Fund.Just 10 months into treatment, Emma established Emma Rose – A Patient Helping Patients as a way to pay it forward to other little ones fighting cancer. For the past 4+ years, Emma has been collecting gifts from people all across the country. Much to the delight of all the patients and nurses, Emma bundles the thoughtful goodies up, beautifully packages them and delivers 50-70 of these comfort gift packages to her fellow patients every month.

Emma Rose has brought so much love, joy, and support to hundreds of young cancer fighters and their families over the years.  Now Emma and her family need YOUR support. This past Christmastime, they were devastated to learn, just days before the “magic” 5 years, that Emma’s cancer had returned. Emma has now begun her 2nd fight against Leukemia. This time, she will have 2+ years of an even more rigorous chemo regiment. Because the treatment protocol is so lengthy and expensive, we are asking for financial donations and heartfelt prayers to help ease the burden Emma Rose and her family now face.  The family is sincerely grateful for your generosity.

To send a check to the family, please make it out to Emma Rose Benefit Fund and mail to Emma Rose, PO Box 485, Thiensville, WI, 53092

Last night we attended the gala for Special Spaces, one of my very favorite organizations that brings comfort to kids fighting cancer & other life threatening illnesses.

In April of last year, I received a dream bedroom makeover thanks to Ann, Cathy, & the many other wonderful volunteers and donors who helped make it possible! I spent so much time in my room during my treatments and it was such a beautiful place to be able to heal and relax when I was so sick.

Last year I was too sick to go to the gala, but this year I was well enough to attend and was able to speak and share how much this organization means to me. My speech is attached below in a YouTube link if you’re interested in watching!

Thank you special spaces for such an amazing night!

Celebrating because after +264 days, my T CELL COUNT IS FINALLY OVER 200!!!

200 is the “magic number” transplant patients are always hoping to get their T cells to! Although this is only half of what a low normal is in a healthy person, it’s a big deal for us transplant patients! Celebrating my tiny victory of a 219 T-cell count today!!!

Day +244

WBC 2.9
Hemoglobin 10.8
Platelets 38

It’s been quite an exciting two weeks since my last appointment! I started classes and LOVE them! It’s so good to be back in school rather than stuck at home all the time. In my Nursing Foundations class we are learning about sterile fields, medication administration, and next week we learn how to start IVs and administer vaccines!

My platelets made a nice jump from my last appointment from 30-38! I’m hoping they keep going up from here so I can accomplish my 2018 goal of a platelet count above 100! We had both the stomach flu & a bad cold hit our house but thankfully I managed to stay healthy. I may not have the strongest immune system, but it sure seems to be working! At my next appointment I will have my T cells checked again along with my next vaccine. My last T cell count was 74 back in November so I’m hoping these past three months have given it a chance to shoot up! A low normal would be around 400, so I still have a ways to go.

At my last appointment, I had Pulmonary Function Testing done to check my lungs since I had some complications after transplant. While my numbers haven’t gone down, they also haven’t come up like they should. I will be seeing a pulmonologist some time in the next few months to see what they say just to make sure everything is ok there!

Next appointment is on Valentines Day and I’m hoping for another good jump in platelets & a good T cell count!!
