The Story

The Paulsons have helped so many in the childhood cancer world over the past 4+ years. Now it is our turn to help them.
At just 16 years old, on January 17, 2012, the lovely Emma Rose was diagnosed with Very High Risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). After heroically enduring 2½ years of intense chemotherapy, her family was confident that she was completely and forever cured. Emma completed treatment, graduated high school and began her studies as a nursing student at her beloved St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN. She was successfully pursing her dream to become a pediatric oncology nurse, and to hopefully one day work alongside the nurses who saved her life at Children’s Hospital of WI’s MACC Fund.Just 10 months into treatment, Emma established Emma Rose – A Patient Helping Patients as a way to pay it forward to other little ones fighting cancer. For the past 4+ years, Emma has been collecting gifts from people all across the country. Much to the delight of all the patients and nurses, Emma bundles the thoughtful goodies up, beautifully packages them and delivers 50-70 of these comfort gift packages to her fellow patients every month.

Emma Rose has brought so much love, joy, and support to hundreds of young cancer fighters and their families over the years.  Now Emma and her family need YOUR support. This past Christmastime, they were devastated to learn, just days before the “magic” 5 years, that Emma’s cancer had returned. Emma has now begun her 2nd fight against Leukemia. This time, she will have 2+ years of an even more rigorous chemo regiment. Because the treatment protocol is so lengthy and expensive, we are asking for financial donations and heartfelt prayers to help ease the burden Emma Rose and her family now face.  The family is sincerely grateful for your generosity.

To send a check to the family, please make it out to Emma Rose Benefit Fund and mail to Emma Rose, PO Box 485, Thiensville, WI, 53092

Day +26
WBC 1.3 ANC 663
It has been kind of quiet the past few days. Emma was pretty sleepy yesterday and this morning. This is not unexpected as her counts are coming in and her body is working hard. Today is the first day of an ANC over 500. She is considered engrafted when she has 3 consecutive days with an ANC of 500+. She is getting close! We haven’t ruled out a goal of being home by the 4th, but she is not there yet.
Emma looks good and feels good. But something is still going on with her lungs. She is still using oxygen fairly often during the day and overnight. Our team continues to run tests in order to stay ahead of whatever may be going on. They did a CT scan this morning and her lungs look “patchy”. They are following up with a bronchoscopy tomorrow to see what information they can gather from that and to determine how to proceed.
For a little fun this afternoon, Emma played with the virtual reality goggles. And she was required to wear a hair net. 😂🤣 Also this afternoon, our friend Bailey Dove rang the bell!! Her twin sister Lily rang the bell almost two years ago; two cancer survivors under the age of 12 in one family… that is quite an accomplishment. So happy for them!!
Tonight’s specific prayer request is that Emma’s lungs improve and that her medical team gets answers and a plan based on the results of tomorrow’s bronchoscopy.

Day +22   WBC .6   ANC 196
Short but sweet update today… This morning’s lung x-ray looked good enough that they did not need to schedule another thoracentisis at this time. J They will do another x-ray on Monday to make sure everything still looks good. This afternoon Dr. M came in and said Emma looks great and she is continuing to get better!! Thank you for your continued prayers. We look forward to an uneventful weekend and to celebrating Steven’s birthday on Sunday.

Unfortunately, two of our long time HOT friends could use your prayers in a special way. 5 year-old Liam just found out his cancer has returned for the 4th time. Options this time around are extremely limited. And 16 year-old Mitch just found out last night that he relapsed as well. Please pray for peace and guidance for both families.

Day +21
WBC .5 ANC 232.
I am sitting across from Emma right now as she is falling asleep at the end of her biweekly massage. ☺ This is one hospital perk she is going to miss a LOT when she comes home.
Emma had the thoracentisis on Tuesday as scheduled. This procedure removed the fluid in the space between her lungs and the inside of her chest wall in order to help her breathe easier and to test the fluid for signs of fungal infection. Under anesthesia, they inserted a needle through her skin between her ribs on each side. The excess pleural fluid was then removed using a syringe. They removed a total of 800 cc’s of fluid just under a liter of fluid! Afterwards, the procedure site hurt more than she expected it to, so she spent the past two days getting her pain under control. The cultures came back negative for any fungal infections, they have not seen any signs of infection, she has not had any fevers, her numbers look good, and she looks good. Her oxygen stats improved after the procedure. Overall she seems to be improving. Her team remains vigilant and proactive as always and we are so grateful for that. They originally scheduled a Bronchoscopy for today, but that was cancelled! :)
This morning's X-ray showed increased fluid around her left lung. They prescribed extra walking, the use of some breathing tools, and 2 doses of Lasix. She will have another X-ray at 6:30 tomorrow morning to see if there is more fluid. Annabelle is staying over with her and neither of them are thrilled about that early wake up time after Girls Night! The results of the X-ray will determine whether or not she needs an ultrasound. If she needs an ultrasound, those results will determine whether she needs another thoracentisis on Friday. Lots of prayers that wont be necessary. Tuesday and Wednesday were hard days for Emma. But today has been much better. She has already gone on three walks around HOT, met several new little friends, and her friend Jenna the Dance and Movement Therapist just came in to work her usual magic. Annabelle is here now too, and that always brightens Emma’s days!
The specific prayers we are requesting are for continued improvement for her lungs and increased energy and healing as her WBC continue to rise. Thank you all for your love and support.
