The Story

Netiya is a nonprofit working to advance food security in Los Angeles by installing food gardens at Churches, Synagogues, and Mosques.  90% of food grown is utilized by community members in need.  We are currently raising funds to install a garden at Emmanuel HM Turner A.M.E. Church in Compton - and the need is great!  The church is located in one of the most crowded, people-dense communities in all of Los Angeles, with a liquor store on nearly every corner but not one – not ONE! major supermarket. Netiya and the Emmanuel HM Turner A.M.E. Church urgently need to raise $15,000 to cover the costs of city permits, professional plumbing and materials.  Every dollar helps and we are thrilled to have a matching opportunity!  The Schusterman Foundation will give $5000 to this project once we raise $10,000.

The $15,000 will go directly into growing a sustainable garden!  To turn the lot into a fully operational, living-breathing community food source, a fresh water line must be installed in the lot where the urban garden will be located. The irrigation retrofit would include running plumbing from the city meter located near the street to the garden location approximately 120 feet away. Additionally we need mulch, plants, seeds, all to grow healthy food for our community!

Please help our neighbors in Los Angeles!  Please give a donation today and share this campaign with your friends and family.

*Your generous donation will be tax deductible. Please use Netiya’s fiscal sponsor, Community Partner’s, EIN 95-4302067 for your accounting purposes.

This campaign is being spearheaded by a member of the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation network and has been awarded a matching grant. Schusterman is a global organization that seeks to ignite the passion and unleash the power in young people to create positive change for themselves, the Jewish community and the broader world. We did it, people!!!
Please join us at the Emmanuel HM Turner Church this Sunday, 12pm - 4pm to install the food garden!

This Sunday, 12-4pm, we are gathering for Tu B'Shevat in South LA. Netiya invites YOU to celebrate the birthday of trees with our partners: Emmanuel HM Turner AME church, Westside Urbs, Slauson Recreational Center, City of Youth, the Council Member Curren Price, the Schusterman Foundation, and so many of YOU, the multi-faith food justice community ~
There are strong components of sustainability that are integral to the success of this project - there is a local school run by City of Youth that plans to have the students grow the church garden, and their school buy food grown in the church garden to serve their students. Also, our partners from the Health and Wellness Ministry of the Church run a Tea shop and may be able to source herbs for their tea shop! These revenue streams will increase the likelihood of long-term success of the church garden in growing fresh produce for the local community for years to come.

Grab your friends/family, grab your garden gloves and join us to put your hands in the soil.
Grow community food security! This is solidarity.
This is faith in action!

CM Curren Price has donated $4500 for the install of the pipeline and the meter onsite. This enables Netiya to work with Nate Looney to install the food garden with the church!
