Netiya is a nonprofit working to advance food security in Los Angeles by installing food gardens at Churches, Synagogues, and Mosques. 90% of food grown is utilized by community members in need. We are currently raising funds to install a garden at Emmanuel HM Turner A.M.E. Church in Compton - and the need is great! The church is located in one of the most crowded, people-dense communities in all of Los Angeles, with a liquor store on nearly every corner but not one – not ONE! major supermarket. Netiya and the Emmanuel HM Turner A.M.E. Church urgently need to raise $15,000 to cover the costs of city permits, professional plumbing and materials. Every dollar helps and we are thrilled to have a matching opportunity! The Schusterman Foundation will give $5000 to this project once we raise $10,000.
The $15,000 will go directly into growing a sustainable garden! To turn the lot into a fully operational, living-breathing community food source, a fresh water line must be installed in the lot where the urban garden will be located. The irrigation retrofit would include running plumbing from the city meter located near the street to the garden location approximately 120 feet away. Additionally we need mulch, plants, seeds, all to grow healthy food for our community!
