The Story

We are all incredibly relieved that Emma, Joe, Tony and Gus are safe after loosing everything in the fire.  So many have offered to help but sometimes it's hard to know what's needed.  Here's your chance!  Instead of a bottle of wine, dinner out or a week of lattes please donate*.  Let's show our friends we care and help them out - you know they'd do it for us!

*IMPORTANT. Once you have selected your donation amount the site will suggest a 'tip' percentage for the YouCaring site. This is not necessary or required. In the percentage box select 'other' and set the tip amount to zero before confirming your donation.

Unlike many other donation sites the YouCaring site doesn't charge a fee, however all donation sites use a third party credit card processor and these processors charge 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction.

Please mail Gift Certificates or checks to Emma and Joe at  PO Box 1136, Carpinteria, CA 93014

Packages should be sent to  4621 Carpinteria Avenue, Carpinteria, CA 93013

There has been an incredible outpouring of generosity from friends of the Gonzalez family. I wanted to give an update on how they're doing; today marks two months since the loss of their homes, the water lines have been put back in along with a new water storage tank. Hopefully in a week or two, with a new pump, they'll have running water again!

Joe and Tony went into the Sespe Wilderness on a father/son pack trip with the mules this weekend, a much needed break for the two of them. Gus and Emma are enjoying a little quiet time, the first full day at home in 60 days.

The welding shop is doing well, Joe's thoughts on retirement are on the back burner for a bit, secretly I don't think he'll ever stop working, he's so good at what he does.

Emma is loving her second job at Santa Barbara Middle School as they prepare to take the students into the local backcountry in March, something she's done for the past 6 years, this year in particular it will be a much needed respite and reconnection with nature. The school has been incredible at wrapping their arms around the students and families during this difficult time.

Thank you all again, you have made a big difference for this family, you have helped make them strong, and determined by your example, to "pay in forward".

A beautiful update from Emma.

"This past weekend was our final attempt at retrieving any precious items from the rubble that was once our home.  We knew the rain was coming, and that after it had passed all chances of finding anything would be lost.

Over the weekend Joe and I had the gift of friends to help with that process. Gus had yet to go through the spaces where his precious things were and so I stood by him and we searched, sifting endlessly through the ash, looking for specific items.  As I was beginning to give up I looked down and saw his tiny six month old footprint in the ash, barely visible. Unbelievable.  Then as I took another step, there was the other piece, his little hand print.  So perfectly intact, despite the heat.  Small miracles!"

Please continue to share this fundraiser.
