The Story

Nepal was struck by a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake on April 25, 2015, followed by innumerable aftershocks, that inflicted infrastructural damages and thousands of casualties. There is widespread devastation across the country. The death toll is officially 8,676, with 21,952 injured. The magnitude of the damage is still being assessed as hundreds of buildings have collapsed including many homes and Nepal’s cultural heritage sites. Our beautiful home country Nepal and her people need your support and prayers at this time of crisis. In our previous fundraising drive, both on-line and on the ground, we raised $6660, and donated the money to Nepal Red Cross Society to aid their short-term relief campaign. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our donors and well-wishers.

But the needs of Nepal will prolong beyond this small window of time into years in the future. In view of this, we are doubling our efforts to raise even more money for long-term rebuilding of our country. One of the biggest casualties in this earthquake were schools, with hundreds reduced to rubble in the earthquake. This is especially saddening because schools are learning grounds for millions of Nepali children. Children are the future of Nepal. Without a safe place to learn, Nepali children have had to make do with make-shift schools. In what should be a joyous period in their lives, they instead live in a constant state of paranoia. A dark shadow has been cast on the very future of our impoverished country. By rebuilding a school in a place of need, we can perhaps make lives better for at least some children in Nepal. We have started this "Adopt a School" project with the long-term future in mind, and would want to run this in a sustainable manner. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Nepalese Students Association, a student club registered at Arizona State University, has jumpstarted an "Adopt a School" program that seeks to rebuild a school in Nepal. Perhaps, there is a silver lining at the edges of even the darkest of clouds.

It is with heartfelt gratitude that Nepalese Students Association at Arizona State University announces that we just donated $6610 to the Nepal Red Cross Society (www.nrcs.org) to aid their short-term relief operations. The receipt of the money transfer has been uploaded, and can be accessed in the Photos & Videos tab. Without your contributions, this would not have been possible. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Kamesh Regmi, on behalf of Nepalese Students Association.
