The Story

Eastern Track 400m  Project

Project Purpose and Vision

The Eastern Track and Field program is a program of excellence.  From its founding it has been one of the top performing programs in Kentucky.  Under the guidance of a long line of great coaches the lives of many young men and women have been dramatically changed for the better.  Right now our track facility is not in a state of excellence.

The Eastern Track Boosters have undertaken a capital campaign to renovate our track and field facility.

We will look to involve the following stakeholders:

  • Current parents and athletes,
  • Eastern's Proud Alumni,
  • Community members,
  • Future Eagle runners and families, and
  • Corporate partners...

… willing to invest in an upgrade of our track facility.

With $250,000 we will be able to restore our facility to excellence.  We will convert the distance from 440 yards to 400 meters, resurface the track, improve the field event venues, and adjust the alignment of the track to put the start/finish line on the same side as our home bleachers.

The upgraded venue would better serve the team, school, and community.

Team
The team would have a home that they could take pride in.  The new venue would be superior for both training and hosting events.  There are currently no East end public schools with quality venues for hosting track events.  With an upgraded facility Eastern could become a hub for the sport in this part of the city.  We could host elementary, middle school, and high school events during the scholastic season as well as youth events during the summer track season.

School
The track facility is one of the most used athletic facilities on campus.  Nearly every team on campus uses the track for conditioning.  The venue is also used by the students in ROTC, PE, and health classes not to mention many activities like the Water Walk and Senior Olympics.

Community
An upgraded track would open up many new opportunities for community use.  Youth activities like the Elementary Cluster Track Meet would have a better home.  The venue could also promote community fitness by offering public use during established non-school hours each week.  We could offer the community a safe venue to train for health and well-being or competitive fitness.

Many have asked about the progress of our Track Renovation Project so I’ll give an update to all.  As most of you know we have been raising money for 2 ½ years to renovate our sad track.  Over that time thanks to you and many others we have raised over $160,000 from track and cross country team fundraising, donations from alumni & families, and gifts from other campus organizations.  This spring our boosters have been exploring the option of financing to finish the project sooner.  We have had several families in our program volunteer to back a loan for our booster club of up to $250,000.

In recent weeks we have gotten finalized plans from our engineer and contractors, final bids for the project (that were within our budget), and a stamp of approval from the district Director of Facility Planning.  In about two weeks our proposal will go to the Jefferson County Board of Education for approval at their June 12th meeting.  Our hope is that they will give us the go ahead and that our track can be under construction before the end of June.  The construction has two phases, both approximately 2 weeks in length.  The first phase is demolition and asphalt work and if everything goes according to plan that may well be finished by July 15th.  After a few weeks of curing the asphalt will be ready to be rubberized and painted.  Depending on the weather and contractor availability this will either happen in early August or when we have break in the home football schedule in early fall.

Obviously, there are still many things that need to fall into place but right now there is a very good chance that Eastern will have a new home track facility very early in the 2018-19 school year!

That said, since we are taking a loan for a large part of the cost of construction and equipment, our fundraising has not ended!  We are still accepting donations at https://www.youcaring.com/eastern-track-boosters-458195 or you can write a check of any amount to “Eastern 400m Project” and mail it to Eastern.

We are also doing a 12 Hour Run-a-thon on Friday June 8th.  You can sponsor Coach Horan or any of our current athletes either with a flat donation or a per mile commitment.  If you want to sponsor Coach Horan please an email and we can connect!

Thanks to all of those who have supported us already and thanks to those who are ready to help us finish the track!

We are really picking up steam.  We are closing in on $100K.  If you count commitments and donations received we are over $95,000.  Can we break through the $100,000 barrier before we get to spring break (4/1).  Can you help us break through?

We haven't posted an update in a few weeks as we were in the heart of preparing for the Eastern Relays, the premier track meet in this region.  This year we hosted over 2000 athletes from 140+ schools and 7 states.  It was an amazing meet with tons of national class marks.  We saw several new meet records but none more impressive than the 8:46 3200m by OH's Andrew Jordan.  That mark was a national leader at the time and is currently ranked 2nd nationally.

With that meet behind us our attention will return to our 400m Project.  The meet did help rasie over $10,000 for the project.  Between money collected and committed we are over 25% towards our goal.  100 meters down and less than 300m to go!
