- Depression ranks among the top 5 causes of disability among Palestinians.
- Approximately 1 out of every 4 Palestinians living in the Middle East suffers from severe and chronic post-traumatic stress disorder.
- Ongoing stressors include high poverty rates, limited educational and professional opportunities, protracted displacement, and constant conflict. The ramifications go beyond the individual and negatively affect the productivity and economic wellbeing of all Palestinians.
Who we are:
In 2012, we started Dunia Health with a mission to reduce the burden health care providers face when serving refugees. At the UNRWA, a handful of clinicians at each refugee camp clinic are responsible for tens of thousands of Palestinian refugees. We created an alert system that uses text messages to notify patients of their missed appointments. These messages, costing six cents each, cut down the time clinicians spent on administrative tasks. Our text alert brought back patients who were over 200 days late for an appointment the very next day. We have cut down the average number of days that a patient is late for an appointment from 2 weeks to 1.5 days.
Our next steps:
We are determined to discovering how mobile health (mHealth) can alleviate the mental health disease burden. Your donation will support the foundational assessment needed for developing a mobile intervention: this summer, our Dunia Health team will be working with UNRWA clinicians and speaking to patients to learn how our tool can best support and improve access to mental health services in the West Bank. By propelling this innovative research forward, you will help reduce crippling morbidity and improve countless lives.
