The Story

The DIY Communities Safety Fund is a San Francisco Bay Area-based micro-grant program that provides direct financial assistance for critical upgrades to help make alternative spaces safer and, ultimately, code-compliant. The program provides funds for pre-inspections, remediative construction, legal costs, and other fees necessary to make core life-safety improvements. Donations to the DIY Communities Safety Fund are tax deductible through our fiscal sponsor Omni Commons, a 501(c)(3) organization.

BACKGROUND: In the wake of the December 2, 2016 Ghostship Fire in Oakland, California, DIY communities nationwide are facing unanticipated inspections and sudden evictions, especially those inhabiting live/work warehouses viewed as identical to the building where this tragedy occurred.

Alternative spaces are invaluable sites for social alliance, activism, artistic growth, and creative production. Those who live and work in these spaces are often socially marginalized and economically disadvantaged, and have gone to great lengths to create affordable, supportive, and productive environments otherwise unavailable in conventional housing and cultural venues.

MISSION:  We aim to sustain a diverse and strong arts and cultural community in the San Francisco Bay Area, in which alternative spaces play a crucial role. The DIY Communities Safety Fund offers financial assistance and works to stabilize alternative spaces. This financial initiative emerged from a coalition of volunteers, DIY Safe Spaces. While our ultimate goal is to raise enough funds to make all Bay Area alternative spaces legally inhabitable and usable for public events, our immediate focus is on harm-reduction and eviction prevention.

SERVICE: The DIY Communities Safety Fund offers financial assistance to individuals and groups that face immediate housing and safety crises and works to stabilize alternative spaces. All proceeds go directly toward pre-inspections, remediative construction, legal costs, and other fees necessary to make core life-safety improvements. The Fund covers safety supplies and improvements, permit and construction costs, legal fees, and relocation expenses for those facing displacement. The Fund recognizes that people of color, members of the LGBTQ community, and other marginalized groups often face greater challenges in economic stability. We prioritize grants for those most at-risk. This initiative facilitates the production of physically safer spaces for a vibrant arts, culture, and political scene in the Bay Area.

If you live, work, and/or provide space for communities to gather and share culture, and are at risk of displacement or have safety concerns, you may be eligible to receive assistance, and we encourage you to apply. Please contact us: [email protected]

As of December 21, 2016, DIY Safe Spaces has sent construction and code-compliance crews to 11 multi-use warehouse spaces in Oakland and throughout the larger San Francisco Bay Area. In addition, we have been first responders to countless individuals in DIY space-related crises, including individuals that lost their housing or housemates at Ghostship and those who face eviction due to live/work space code or safety issues.

SPARXO: We are pleased to have Sparxo as our first corporate sponsor. An online event ticketing platform, Sparxo has committed to contributing 100% of their service fees to the DIY Communities Safety Fund. This applies not only to DIY housing or Ghostship-related benefit events, this applies to ALL events processed through their website posted through THIS LINK.
