SAFER DIY SPACES is an Oakland-based, 100% volunteer-led coalition of activists, architects, contractors, and artists that emerged in the wake of the tragic Ghost Ship fire in Oakland, CA in December 2016. We offer guidance, financial assistance, and labor to the frequently vulnerable members of the Bay Area's communities who live and/or work in non-traditional "DIY" spaces. DIY communities not only face the threat of displacement but also the risk of physical harm because the spaces in which they work or reside frequently require repairs and/or may not be up to code.
While assuring complete anonymity to those in these spaces, our Safer DIY Spaces micro-grant program (aka the "DIY Communities Safety Fund") provides support in the form of pre-inspection walk-throughs and guidance, reparative construction, and micro-grants to help fund the materials and labor necessary to implement core life-safety improvements.
OUR PROGRESS: As of April 2017, our group has met with over 40 DIY spaces in the Bay Area. Because of our work, we are widely seen as "boots on the ground" and have been first responders to countless individuals in DIY space-related crises, including those who face eviction due to live/work space code or safety issues.
NEED HELP? If you live, work, and/or provide space for communities to gather and share culture, and are at risk of displacement or have safety concerns, you may be eligible to receive assistance, and we encourage you to apply. Please contact us through our intake form.
