The Story

The Dirty Girls launder the clothing of refugees who have crossed the Aegean Sea in overcrowded, inadequate boats and blankets and sleeping bags from refugee camps. This time last year, refugee movements to destinations outside of Greece were curtailed, and Dirty Girls' main focus has been on washing blankets for the 54,000 people gathered in both official and unofficial camps in Greece.  Dirty Girls now operate two Laundry missions: One in Athens to serve the massive needs of the mainland of Greece, and another on the island of Lesvos. So far, Dirty Girls has saved about 150 tons of material from landfill. With Dirty Girls recycling blankets rather than UNHCR replacing them with brand new ones, UNHCR has saved about 1,000,000 euros of their donor contributions. They clean, repair, and recycle not only the refugees' laundry, sleeping bags, blankets and tents, as well as provide hand washing powder in camps around Greece. They also collaborate with other grassroots organisations who are moving families from camps into more permanent accommodation, purchasing washing-machines for those apartments.
