The Story

The Problem:

In the past few weeks temperatures have dropped in Michigan into the single digits. It is expected to get colder, while life threatening hypothermia can set in at 32 degrees. This winter there have been reports of individuals experiencing homelessness freezing to death in the city of Detroit.  The shelters are full and warming centers are overcrowded. This leaves our young people vulnerable and many are forced into survival sex to meet basic needs. This is especially prevalent in Detroit where 1 in 5 homeless youth are victims of human trafficking.

How You Can Help:

Detroit Phoenix Center, in partnership with Breakers Covenant Church International (BCCI), is endeavoring to pilot the RISE Emergency Youth Shelter. RISE is designed to keep 20 vulnerable young adults safe and warm at night during the freezing temperatures of the Detroit winter, 7 days a week from 7:00PM-7:00AM starting on February 3rd until the duration of the winter!

With your support and donations, we can ensure that RISE provides accessible resources for youth experiencing homelessness, including but not limited too;  beds, meals, lockers, laundry & transportation assistance, social emotional support, and safety for the duration of winter.

Additional contributions will help establish RISE as a long-term, sustainable operation that compliments the continuum of services provided by the Detroit Phoenix Center.
