The Story

What if every creative mind, from every community, whether low-income or underrepresented, had the opportunity pursue higher education in design?

In 2017, we’re excited to introduce the Design Continuum Fund, a scholarship program that we hope changes the fabric of design in Charlotte. By supporting local creatives who wish to pursue a design education, we aim to make our industry more accessible, inclusive, and progressive. We will award our first scholarship in June 2018 to a local creative student.

The Design Continuum Fund is about doing something bigger than ourselves. By donating, you’ll leave a lasting impact on future generations and help local talent fulfill their potential. Together, we can bring design education to anyone who hopes to pursue it.

We accepting scholarship applications through April 16! All students are welcome to apply here.

The median income in Mecklenburg county is under $57,000. And according to Money magazine, lower-to-middle class families make an average of $69,000 a year, where college accounts for 23% of their income.

This data shows that when it comes to funding college, “it pays to be rich,” says Margaret Cahalan, director of the Pell Institute for the Study of Opportunity in Higher Education. The findings, she says, are further evidence that claims the poor are getting more or better financial aid than the middle or upper classes “are simply not true.”

AIGA hopes to make college accessible for students from all income brackets. Your donation will help make that possible.

In 1993, people of color only accounted for 7% of all designers. Today, they represent closer to a quarter of the design population. It takes awareness, an open dialogue, and opportunities for under-represented groups to make these shifts – including scholarships like the Design Continuum Fund.

Even with this improvement, design still suffers from representation of all races, like many industries do. It's our job to make sure people from every background have a chance to pursue a career in design.

Did you know that students from low-income families are 30% less likely to be enrolled in college than their high-income counterparts?

The AIGA Design continuum fund aims to level the playing field for students from low-income families who want to go to college for art and design. Your donation will help make that change.
