SUPPORTING DAYSI'S FAMILY
This fundraiseris to support Daysi pay her rent, potential legal fees and meet other needs for her family. We became connected to Daysi thanks to Jenna, who is her teacher.
Daysi is an 18 year old undocumented youth and mother. She is a student at Sunset Park High School. She is 12th grade. Daysi has been in the U.S for about 4 years, and recently lost her job due to a domestic violence situation. She is looking to save money for legal fees as she seeks immigration relief. Daysi needs financial support now. Days is one of the many undocumented youth who have never been able to benefit from DACA because she came into the country at a later time and was left out the program. We are looking to raise 2k to sent to her as soon as possible, in the next 3 weeks. We hope that this might be enough to cover 2 months of rent.
At this moment when DACA is being terminated, it is uplifting to witness thousands of people showing up to support those who will be impacted by it through creating fundraisers and extending legal support to our community. However at the same time when conversations are happening to create another legislation in substitute of DACA, it seems important to remember those who DACA left behind to begin with and to remember that migration will continue to happen regardless of people being able to meet random timelines requirements. It is important to redistribute resources for people whose survival is at risk given their multiple realities, as survivors, as youth, as mothers, as non-english speakers, as workers, etc. It is important to remember that undocumentation doesn’t exist in isolation of other forms of violence such as gentrification, gender violence and poverty. As immigrant rights advocates try to get a seat at the table for immigration law negotiations, it’s important for us to remember and to advocate to meet all the complexities and necessities of an undocumented life.
Thank you to Ro Garrido for creating the art image to this fundraiser (and checking my grammar!). You can check and support their art at rogarrido.comSame love to Jenna, for being an amazing and radical educator.
