Here's the story behind the commissions-
Few clarinetists ever perform the melodious unaccompanied 1927 "18 Études de Perfectionnement" by Paul Jeanjean (1874-1928). Why are these great Études never performed? I think it's because the beautiful solo clarinet melodies need a piano accompaniment to fill them out.
So, I commissioned talented young composer Joseph Hallman to write original accompaniments to the 10 best of the etudes. Joe Hallman’s new piano parts bring a fresh, yet matching, style to the works. His piano parts bring the 1927 Études into the 21st Century!
My hope is, with these new accompaniments, more clarinetists will perform these musical gems, and audiences will be able to enjoy them as fresh, original works. Each work stands alone, but there is enough stylistic variation between etudes to allow for mix and match combinations. So a clarinetist can either create sets for any variety of performances, or perform one alone. Here's to creating more great recital repertoire for clarinetists to perform.
I'll be posting videos of my performances of them over the next few months. I have 3 videos already up for you to view. Help me get Jeanjean Keyed UP! Your donation will be safely handled by PayPal or credit card.
