The Story

When we took Henry to the pediatrician on Thursday morning 5/4/17, we never imagined we'd be moving him into a room on the Oncology floor 48 hours later. His CT scans show what appears to be a large cancerous tumor near his liver, above his kidney. The doctors have told us it is stage four neuroblastoma. We will have to pursue aggressive treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy, bone marrow transplants, and radiation, as his condition is advanced and has already moved to other areas in his body, including in his bone marrow.

Please continue to pray for our boy, us, and our other children as we process and move forward into this thoroughly unexpected journey. We are leaning on your prayers as we are understandably overwhelmed.

God gave us 2 Thessalonians 3:16 yesterday on a t-shirt that was given to Hank: "Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every situation. The Lord be with you."

Last May, when Henry was first diagnosed with stage-four neuroblastoma, we were given a road map of his projected treatments: 5 rounds of chemotherapy, surgery to resect the tumor, two rounds of bone marrow transplant, radiation, and his final stage of treatment, immunotherapy.

Today we saw our oncologist to review Henry's most recent scans and biopsies, in preparation for this last stage. While we are excited to share that they show no evidence of neuroblastoma, his fight is not yet done. We have learned that immunotherapy will give him better odds of avoiding a relapse.

It's hard for us to explain, but here's our best effort: immunotherapy is a series of treatments over the course of about 6 months that will help stave off any neuroblastoma cells that are microscopic/unseen. Some of these meds are administered in the hospital for a week or two at a time. Some are given at home. The projected end is sometime in September. The schedule is complicated, but our team knows their stuff. Henry began immunotherapy on Sunday night, March 25, when was admitted for the first week. He is being monitored by nurses intensely and is facing possible side effects like pain in his bones, rash, and fever. It won't be as bad as his previous hospital stays, but it won't be a vacation for him, either. Dr Griffin has confidence that Henry will work through immunotherapy with the same level of success he had in every other phase. Other one or two-week hospital stays are scheduled for April, May, June, and July. When he is at home, he will take special medicines every day in addition to his regular prescriptions.

Y'all, we are so grateful for your prayers, which continue to make a difference and bring our boy through so much difficulty. He is such a wonderful, bright, cheerful, trusting, loving child, and he is growing up before our eyes. This has been and will continue to be used for good, and we are so blessed. Thank you for being a part of the marathon with us. We simply could not do this without the support of all of you!!

With so much love,
Dave, Dawn, Lucy, Eli, Joel and Henry

04/05/2018:

After an 11-month absence, we are preparing to bring Henry to church with us this Sunday. His doctor has given us the tentative go-ahead, provided he is not in any large, crowded situation, and not exchanging touch with anyone sick. We know everyone is excited to see him and celebrate with him how far he's come in his fight against cancer. We just ask that you refrain from over-crowding him, offering handshakes, hugs, high fives, etc. He is so eager to be a part of church that we'll be working hard to keep him from running up and down the halls! Truly, his return is something worth celebrating. Thank you for helping us do that safely.

We love you all!

Dave, Dawn, Lucy, Eli, Joel & Henry "Hank the Tank" Reiss

04/02/2018: Check this out! Henry's on the news!
On Easter afternoon, our family went down to the hospital for Henry to get the 10th of his 14 consecutive injections. We walked into this amazing crowd of loving, gentle coaches and nurses who gave a basket to Henry (and each of his older siblings). It was a sweet surprise! Thank you all!
