The Story

On January 12, 2017. Darlene woke up out of her sleep crying and screaming. She said she had pain in her stomach and back. I drove her to the ER to be examined. They ran test and we were told she had constipation. We went home and followed up with her Primary doctor three days later. During that time Darlene remained in pain even after taking the meds that were prescribed by the ER.  Darlene was then examimed by her primary and yet again we were told she was very backed up and to try taking more meds to help relieve her. Long story short the pain never went away and nothing seemed to help poor Darlene. She had sleepless nights filled with belly aches, horrible back pain, she couldnt eat or use the bathroom. Darlene had three different ER visits and ten primary visit. We were told the same thing each time CONSTIPATION! I knew as a mother something just wasn't right . On February 7th Darlene woke up for school and she complained of slight numbness and tingling in her legs and feet. She went to school and one hour later I was called by the nurse that said Darlene had fallen and I think she needs to go home she is very off balanced. I rushed to pick up Darlene and drove straight to her primary doctor and let him know he needs to figure this out.. this was not normal pain like this didnt happen for no reason and everything they said to do did not work.  He examined her and said I'm sending you to Loma Linda Childrens Hospital. I fear Darlene might have something seriously wrong and they have the best team of doctors there to handle anything. He called the hospital and wrote a note letting the ER know what was going on and Darlene was taken in for test immediately . Finally at 6am the next morning doctors came in and said they seen something in her back and it could be a mass or tumor. They let me know she needs surgery right away to remove it and I should have my family here as soon as possible cause this was going to happen fast. Darlene went into a four hour surgery and doctors removed 4 bones in her spine and cut two nerves to remove the tumor. Tumor was localized and said they removed as much as they could see. They sent off the tumor to the lab to see if it was cancerous and On February 9th, 2017  the results came back and Darlene was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma PNET. We immediately got moved into the cancer unit inside Loma Linda and were told that even though doctors removed the tumor Darlene still had a source that lived within her and will need to go through a long aggressive chemo for this type of cancer.  This news was like a whirlwind.. This all happened so fast. This was horrible news that no parent wants to hear but yet I remained calm. My heart was filled with peace and comfort and I did not cry. I knew who has the last word. I knew as a believer if the lord brings you to it, he will see you through it! The verses we now hold tight to are Roman 8:11 and Jeremiah 29:11... Unfortunately her fight against cancer will be very costly. We would never ask for anything we did not need.. We will also be setting up a facebook page that will bring updates on Darlene's Journey, prayer request and progress reports. We Thank You everyone for all Prayer, Love, Support, Well wishes and positive Vibes. We are truly grateful for you all. #TeamDarlene

Darlene has 18 weeks left of chemotherapy. She has finished 30 consecutive days of proton beam radiation. Echo test have been done and docs say heart looks and sounds strong all is good. Darlene had 12 week scan and they came back clear... No Tumor! Darlene's legs are getting stronger and her walking has improved so much.

We couldn't be more blessed by her progression. Soon Darlene will be starting 8th grade through home and hospital instruction. She is very happy to have her life back slowly. Darlene's spirits are amazing and we can't Thank You all enough for all the love and support! #TeamDarlene

Update: May 9, 2017
Week Ten
Last week Darlene had a outpatient visit to the Oncology/Hemotology clinic where she was given a fast push of chemo medicine VinCRIStine, two units of blood (each unit is two hours long) and then we were able to go home and enjoy a barbaque dinner that her dad prepared, hangout by the pool, watch smurfs at the movies and sleep in our own beds. This was the Best day we spent as a family in awhile...
In these past ten weeks Darlene has had to adjust to the weekly treatments of chemo, malnutrition of moderate degree, disease of white blood cells, blood transfusions, nausea and vomiting X100, continuous hospital stays and clinic visits, blood test, mersa screenings, difficulty walking, accepting help from other with all her daily activities and the list goes on...This is alot for any child to have to go through but when it is your own child words can not describe the pain you feel as a parent.
Phase one of Darlene's treatment is thankfully coming to an end though it is far from being over, it's going to be a huge relief to put the first twelve weeks behind us and move forward towards Darlene being cancer free.
Phase Two will begin next week. Darlene's oncologist already explained to us what is to come. Darlene will still get chemo treatments weekly, some chemo meds will be decreased and one added, also Darlene will start thirty consecutive days of proton beam radiation which was explained to be more draining on her body then chemo. Darlene will also have a number of test ran to see if her body is free from tumors. Cancer is in no way shape or form a blessing but Darlene's tumor was localized and there was no metastasis spread so that to us was a huge blessing. We pray her test come back clear again.. In Jesus Name.
Please keep Darlene and our family in prayer. We are all faced with different trails daily and I would be lying to say this has not been extremely hard on our family to get through as one. We are apart constantly and with so much to take care of we have no choice but to divide and conquer.
My prayer is that this makes our family stronger as a unit and Darlene has one amazing testimony to share.
Thank you again for all the love, support and uplifting messages, letters and cards. We are deeply touched and cant thank you enough!!!  #TeamDarlene

UPDATE: 04-29-2017
Week Nine of treatment & Team Darlene Fundraiser.
This was one busy week for Darlene, #TeamDarlene and #TeamKings. Darlene was admitted last Tuesday for a two day chemo  treatment, CT scan and was also fitted for a body mold. Darlene will lay down inside the mold during proton radiation.
Darlene was pre-medicated for nausea before starting chemo Tuesday and was released Wednesday night to recuperate at home before having to attend Kings brewing Co. 1 year Anniversary & Team Darlene Fundraiser on Saturday April 29th.
It's been one crazy month working up to the big day. The brewery was super busy making all the magic happen behind the scenes. They brewed so many new NE Juicy IPAs, barrel aged  goodness and some tasty sours. Team Darlene was just as busy with planning, daily bulletin interview, decorations, merchandise, donations, baskets, and loose ends.
The big day finally arrived,  Darlene woke up feeling excited and good! We got ready, packed up the car and we were off to the brewery to begin our celebration. It was so exciting to see so many people came out to support Darlene and Kings on thier big day. We seen old friends, met new friends, cancer survivors came to shake the hand of Darlene and to cheer her on,  We had our wonderful family by our side and of course our amazing craft beer community friends and fam were there to show the love & support... THANK YOU EVERYONE for making this event a success!
Darlene would like to send out a special Thank You to... @kingsbrewingco Family for all thier hard work on Saturday,  Demetrius Cooper (Uncle edo) for working long hours to get everything brewed and running around to get permits.
