The Story

The mission of Awake is to be a catalyst for leadership, relationship, and justice. This is a critical time for Awake. Our start-up grant is coming to an end and we need to develop a strong base of giving to make our work sustainable. We ask you to consider making a tax-deductible gifts at the following levels:

$30 Donor
Supply a set of books for our Summer Reading Program where kids like Herbert are transformed into readers, "I am proud that for the first time in my life I liked and finished an entire book on my own."

$50 Contributor
Provide two weeks of snacks or one week of supplies for the Science Club, where participants learn to design, test, built (repeat!) STEM projects. Your gift will help students like Ben say, "I used to give up, but I don't do that anymore."

$150 Sponsor
Sponsor a community initiative like our Berwyn News Crew, a tenacious group of residents who are working to bring a newspaper to Berwyn, so that, as one member said, "Berwyn can get to know itself." Your gift will supply them with flyers, surveys, and coffee for meetings.

$250 Benefactor
This gift covers the cost of one child in our Summer Reading Program. Parents like Maria say, "I want to thank you for the excellent reading program you offered this past summer. My daughter . . . improved her reading ability more than ever! I am so impressed with the outcome of this program. She is now interested in reading more every day. Thank you!!"

$1,000 Sustainer
Pay for one teacher or four program aides for the Science Club or Summer Reading Program. Program aides, like Alejandra, say, "I gained confidence in front of a large group of kids and worked on quick thinking."

You have all been so generous with your gifts this season. With the gifts we have received so far and those pledged, we anticipate reaching $12,500 - that's $2,500 over our goal! We give special thanks to Benson Family Charitable Foundation (World's Largest Laundromat), who not only generously gave $5,000 to this campaign, but also inspired generosity in others.

Your care and support will bring an after-school Science Club and a Summer Reading Program to children in our community, and provide support for community initiatives like the Newspaper Group and the Sew to Death Club (youth group that sews gifts for people in our community). And the abundance of support is moving us closer to our dream of starting a community choir. You make all of this possible!

Our hearts are full - what a wonderful outpouring of support! Thanks to all of our donors, we reached our matching funds goal today. The Benson Family Charitable Foundation has pledged $5,000 in addition to what we have raised, which puts us over our goal for this drive. Thank you!

Thank you to all who have given so far! Your gift supports projects like our upcoming Sew for Community sessions, where we are partnering with Youth Crossroads to sew hats and scarves for veterans at the Oak Park Vet Center. Youth project team leaders are learning how to sew so that they can help others at the events.
