The Story

GEMS doesn't make a profit, never has, never will. Its profit is felt by the families it works with and the 200 children who attend the school. For eight and a half years, these children have received an education that believes that every child can succeed, every child has talent, every child has worth, every child has the right to an education of quality and ambition for each and every one of our wonderful children who shine. They are the true GEMS! But GEMS needs a new home after our old one was so cruelly taken from us and we need to build it for our 200 children and their futures too. We have new land and a new beginning, but what we need is your help. We need to raise the money needed to build our new home and with it, the future of our children. Without it, they will suffer mediocrity, hostility, fear and punishment. We need to build their future today. And that is why we started GEMS. To give children a fair chance, a bright future, an education that is the best that we can provide, dreams without limits and a sense of worth and empowerment for them and, one day, their children too. And you can look at our brand new school and know - wherever in the world you may be - that you helped build this new school, you made a brighter future, it was you that made a real difference to the lives of countless children. And with your help, you can build tomorrow today!

The new building is in the upper right corner. In the lower left is the building for the toilets. The men have accomplished a lot in the last few days, and on Monday we will begin our classes again. The building is very simple at present. While we have a roof, walls, electricity, toilets and fans, and blackboards on the walls, we will not have a floor as of yet. The children will sit on the ground, which is covered with plastic sheeting with a rug over top. We need to build 100 double desks ($15.00 US each) pour a cement floor ($1500.00 US), and make a second building ($6,000.00 US) which will have a kitchen, dining hall, computer lab, library, science lab and office. So every donation that comes in gets us that much closer to having a full, operational school. Thanks everyone for caring and for helping our GEMS students.

The new site for GEMS!

Hi everyone, as of today the construction of the new GEMS has begun. You know, when I received the news that the Supreme Court had ruled in favour of the HANS Foundation, I was devastated and I sat quiet for a long time, and then our last bell rang and all the kids came pouring out of the school. As I looked at their happy faces, I thought to myself, GEMS is not here, GEMS is these children. We can have GEMS anywhere. I could teach under a tree for that matter. And then the next morning a villager came to us, concerned about the school and what we were going through, and offered his land -- beautiful land across the road and down the mountain from our present location. He could sell it for a fortune, but he has offered it to us. And then a second villager came forward and offered his land, lying adjacent to the first villager's fields. Bless them! The angels are at work! Construction begins today. And we hope to be open again within two weeks time. So the journey of GEMS continues!
