As the first organization of its kind, in North Carolina, W.I.S.E. (Women In Support & Empowerment) Community Doulas is a unique, innovative grassroots organization created to provide caring, sensitive and culturally appropriate (free and sliding scale) doula support, to women of color; who lack the adequate resources needed, to afford doula care.
- In Charlotte, NC, black women are 2 times more likely to die during pregnancy and childbirth than their white counterparts.
- African American babies are nearly 3 times more likely (12.8 deaths for every 1,000 births) to die from premature birth and low birth weight than their white peers (5.1 infant deaths per 1,000 live births). Of all infant mortality racial/ethnic disparities in the state, this disparity is the greatest.
- Additionally, women of color nationally have faced the highest cesarean rates of any other demographic. With each increasing cesarean, women are at higher risks of infection, poor wound healing, increased blood loss, post-surgical complications, hysterectomy, placental complication (accreta), lower breastfeeding rates and even death.
In Charlotte and many other US cities, race has an independent effect on health outcomes, beyond those explained by socioeconomic differences. Infant mortality rates for college-educated African American women have been documented to be higher than those of white women who did not graduate from high school.
Increasing the capacity and access to full spectrum doula care, for women most at risk of poor health outcomes, uplifts the voices of birthing people, improves birth experiences and births outcomes, and transforms communities.
The Mission of W.I.S.E Community Doulas is to improve the maternal and infant health outcome and disparities of women of color, by fostering a community that advocates, educates, empowers and supports those who are pregnant, their growing families, and the professionals who work with them, during the childbirth continuum.
