The Story

This is a coordinated relief fund in response to the massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake in coastal Ecuador that flattened buildings, killed 100s and left the communities where we work destroyed. These donations will specifically go to the northern part of Jama County where Ceiba Foundation, Finca Mono Verde and Third Millennium Alliance are currently working -- these are poor communities with limited access to resources and will likely be last served by national relief efforts.

Donations may be made online and we pledge that 100% of donations will be go directly to earthquake recovery efforts on the coast. All donations are going directly to the Ceiba Foundation, a registered US 501(c)3 non-profit, so donations are tax-deductible in the United States. Please also check to see if your employer will match donations! We have heard that some international folks (Austria) have had challenges with donating - you can donate directly to Ceiba here, just note they charge a higher processing fee, which is why we changed.

We are also collecting provisions (tarps, water filters, tents, flashlights, batteries, non-perishable foods etc) at Avenida Occidental n46-97 y Francisco Montalvo in Quito if you are there locally.

The power of this earthquake, and the scale of damage, make it clear that recovery efforts will be arduous, lengthy, and expensive. We are united behind Ceiba's established Earthquake Recovery Fund for affected communities, and to channel the outpouring of support from all those who have a personal connection to Tabuga, Camarones, and coastal Ecuador -- former students and volunteers, researchers, friends, and family.

We've got a good update - after a busy couple weeks in coastal Ecuador!

As you may have seen on the Finca Mono Verde or Ceiba Foundation Facebook page, our big news is that our collective Recovery Fund group has been successful in obtaining a $50,000 grant from the International Organization for Migration as part of their global 'Cash for Work' program. This is a fantastic demonstration of the power of good organization and fundraising leading quickly to further success! The $50,000 will now go into cash payouts directly to local villagers in Tabuga & Camarones, as they form teams to clear rubble and tear down damaged buildings over the coming months. This not only gets the reconstruction process moving more quickly than the central Ecuadorian government can manage, but it serves as a brand new source of good wages in the community, for many people who otherwise no longer have jobs.

Our program manager Santiago will manage the relationships with IOM and other entities in Quito to support this effort, and our effective program coordinator Alejandro will continue his great work on the ground matching up resources with the right people, and leading the prioritization and implementation efforts with the community.

Another great local effort has recently been finished up - a 'Tool Library' in Tabuga. The library was built out of bamboo by local community members, Hombro a Hombro and Finca Mono Verde on land adjoining the FMV farm. Tools were donated by caring Ecuadorians up in Quito, which were brought down and now reside in the building - and a loose system of tool rentals has been set up. In this way, community members can have access to a much wider range of helpful items than they otherwise would be able to, so that they can start making upgrades to their houses and other buildings without waiting for other assistance.

In the coming months we plan on totalling up the money and in-kind assets that have been donated to our Recovery Fund effort, so that we can report back to you our donors what that original $100,000 has been leveraged to bring to the region. We think it will be a pretty big multiplier!

Stay tuned, and also be sure to follow the Facebook pages for the Ceiba Foundation, Third Millenium Alliance and Finca Mono Verde for more frequent postings.

Abrazos,
Recovery Team

ALMOST THERE UPDATE:
  • This fundraiser has come such a long way, after just 2 months and a couple days we are only $370 away from $100,000! Please help us by considering a donation or sharing this with others who may be able to help.
  • We've gotten great success on the ground by having a really strong Recovery Coordinator, Alejandro, that you see in some of our most recent pictures.
  • To add and continue that success, we're excited to announce the hiring of a Recovery Manager, to be based in Quito and starting soon! His name is Santiago and we'll post more updates soon on his priorities and experience, but he'll have a desk at the Ceiba office in Quito and help immensely by leading on partnerships and proposal development, and supporting Alejandro on local logistics.
  • We've also completed a video of the past two months - watch for that coming out soon on our Facebook pages and at the YouCaring.com/ceiba website!
Thanks for your continued support.
