The beginning of this journey started when a police officer came to my door the night of December 23, 2010. But for Amanda, it started way before that eventful night which would change her life forever. The ill behaviours of others and what happened as a result continued until she took her life on October 10, 2012 - shortly after posting a You Tube videosharing her story. Through this personal tragedy, I have taken the path in creating Amanda’s Legacy and sharing her story through much advocacy.
Amanda’s story began with the online grooming and exploitation of not only herself but many others, and continued with both on and offline bullying by others. In the years following her death, many others have shared their stories of similar exploitation, losses and emotional trauma. I can only hope to continue to help and show support to youth and other individuals and families in hope they never have to suffer the same way as Amanda did.
Mr Coban is the individual who has allegedly victimized my child, also with at least 39 other young people in different parts of the world. He is finally facing a trial for these 39 victims, which is to begin at the end of January 2017 in the Netherlands, where he will be called to answer for his alleged crimes. After this trial there is an extradition order for him to be brought to Canada to face justice for the 5 charges against him for Amanda’s case. Our governments have worked hard to make this happen and I thank them for this. These trials will be precedent setting with respect to the international laws that govern extradition, sextortion, and online behaviours around the world.
** It is important to note that Amanda’s case is not on trial in the Netherlands.**
As the mother who misses her daughter each and every day, my heart feels that it is necessary for me to travel to the Netherlands to show strong support for those families that are also going through this horrific journey. Together, we will show the world that we will see justice take its course. One of the thoughts that went through my mind as I was making this difficult decision of whether to go or not was if I was ready to be able to see Mr Coban face to face. Through much soul searching and thought, I want him to know to that what he has allegedly done is not to be hidden. The outcome of this trial will be important to not only those involved but to so many others around the world.
In order to see this part of the journey through, this YouCaring campaign has been created to help alleviate the costs incurred. Monies raised will be spent on travelling expenses - airfare, accommodations, transportation, meals, etc. This part of my path will be one of the most emotionally draining, but one of great importance. If the fund exceeds itself, then I can hopefully (and understandably) bring someone along to be my supportive person. A donation of any amount (big or small) is greatly appreciated. Any funds remaining will be used to support other organizations that will benefit young people in need.
Most importantly, I want to thank all my friends and supporters of Amanda’s Legacy (real and virtual) who have encouraged me to go the trial and support justice. To everyone, you will always have my love and admiration for being such strong supporters and advocates for all these years and for also holding me up when I am down.
Love from Carol (and Amanda) xoxo
