Friends, meet Harlee. Sweet Harlee was surrendered to an animal shelter in the DC area in the fall of 2017. We were told the reason for her surrender was because the owner could no longer look after her and also for monetary reasons. But Harlee tells a different story.
Harlee is a very special girl. She has no use of her back legs. This could be the result of a slipped disk in her lower spine, though we suspect it may be the result of abuse. This doesn't slow Harlee down. She can scoot across the floor faster than many of her foster brothers and sisters. She goes down stairs as though she has no care or concern. She loves sitting on the couch and snuggling while watching television.
Miss Harlee has much bigger problems than her back legs. Harlee battles chronic UTIs driven by continence problems and the way she drags herself around. Over time, she will end up with a resistant E Coli infection if an appropriate treatment is not found. Though Harlee moves around with apparent ease, her condition causes deep pain. She also battles chronic bleeding and urine leakage.
Harlee's condition is currently being managed using a combination of cranberry tablets, antibiotics, and restricted activity. But Harlee needs a neurology specialist.
On May 19th, Memo and I will be running for Harlee. Though our girl thinks she can keep up, she cannot. We are running to raise the money needed to support Harlee's consultation with a neurology specialist. We are running in hopes for a more effective treatment that reduces Harlee's pain and chronic issues. We are running in hope that one day Harlee has the freedom to run when she wants to.
