The Story

  • Carlos Aguilar is a big brother and a son, a charming, humble and talented 15-year-old soccer player.  In the fall of 2016, he was like any other teenage athlete, attending 9th grade at West Forsyth High School in Winston-Salem, where he was the top scorer on the JV soccer team.   When Carlos experienced severe headaches and had difficulty with blurred vision, his parents took him to the hospital, thinking perhaps Carlos suffered from a concussion.
  • To everyone's shock, after a biopsy and CT scan, Carlos was diagnosed with stage IV rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer that affects soft tissue (muscle) and connective tissue (tendon and cartilage).   It is a rare type of cancer, and in Carlos' case, it spread rapidly.  Carlos has undergone rounds of chemotherapy and radiation treatment.  A month or two ago, his regular doctors told him there was nothing more they could do for him.  But, Carlos and his family are not ready to give up.
  • Carlos has been accepted to a clinical trial at a hospital in Washington, DC, which requires frequent trips back and forth from their home in NC, and many missed (unpaid) days of work for his parents.  As you can imagine, life has turned upside down for Carlos and his family--mother, father, 11-year-old brother and 3-year-old sister.   The family lives a very modest lifestyle, and Carlos' diagnosis has been very hard on the family, emotionally and financially.
  • Funds will be used to pay for medical treatment and to assist with basic needs for Carlos' family.  No donation is too small.  The family is incredibly grateful for your support.

Carlos' dad, Roberto, reports:

Carlos has had enough of homebound school and is anxious to return to high school!

Carlos is going to begin physical therapy soon to help build up his physical strength.

Carlos will return to Washington, DC for the first round of his immunotherapy trial in March.  Please pray, cross your fingers and/or send out positive energies that the doctors will be able to create a vaccine from Carlos' white blood cells to administer to him in March.

The family is profoundly grateful for your support.  This journey is an incredibly difficult one, but it is made so much easier with the support of friends, family and the community.

Please share this fundraiser far and wide!  I would love to cross "financial concerns" off the list of worries for this family.
