The Story

We are all deeply saddened and heartbroken over Bob's recent health issues. If you know Bob, you know he ranks as the greatest husband, father, son, brother, cousin, teacher, mentor, swim coach, friend and neighbor. In whatever way you know Bob, you know that the last few weeks have been extremely challenging for all of us. He has touched so many, in so many ways, in his very kind and gentle manner and spirit. Carla and his family are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support they have received. As Bob's health declined so rapidly, visiting him has not been a possibility. Please know that your thoughts, countless prayers, thoughtful phone calls, check-ins, texts and endless acts of kindness have all been communicated to Bob. They always triggered an amazing smile and thumbs up! Bob and his family are most appreciative and are so fortunate to have an army of supporters pulling for Bob.

Hundreds have asked what they can do. Unfortunately, it is all in the hands of the most amazing team of doctors and nurses and they are doing all they can for Bob 24/7. We know you want to help in some way:
  • If you wish to text Bob, his cellphone is 617.633.0720. Please do not call, as Bob needs his rest and his voice is faint.
  • Bob's address is 98 Donna Drive Hanover, MA 02339.
  • Also, we have set up this page to support Bob's family. It presents the opportunity for all to express their amazing thoughts and share their funny moments and memories of times with Bob! Again, there are no words to appropriately thank you for all you have done to get us through this most challenging time.
Bless You All,
Kathy, Kara and John

"Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in our lifetime; therefore we must be saved by hope. Nothing which is true, or beautiful, or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history; therefore we must be saved by faith. Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone; therefore we are saved by love."

McGillicuddy, Robert L. of Hanover, formerly of Scituate and Winchester, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2017, surrounded by family from complications with the rare disease Amyloidosis.
Bob is the beloved husband of Dr. Carla Angevine of Hanover, and the amazing and proud father of Christopher, Caitlin, and Matthew McGillicuddy of Hanover. The second of five children, Bob is the adored son of Robert and Mary McGillicuddy of Winchester. His heart-broken siblings include the deceased Mary McGillicuddy of San Francisco, John McGillicuddy of Revere, Kathy Bell and her husband Chris of Quincy, and Kara McGillicuddy of Winchester. He is the incredibly generous and thoughtful Uncle of Kailin and Hannah Bell of Quincy and Dear son-in-law to Donna Marshall of Hingham. Bob is also survived by hundreds of beloved McGillicuddy and McGrath family members whom he cherished and appreciated each and every day.
Bob’s passions in life were that of husband, father, son, teacher, coach and mentor. He was a loving husband that never missed Carla and his special anniversaries and an extremely loving father to his three children. As a family, they enjoyed traveling to Disney World, especially Germany at EPCOT and hosting special family get-togethers, especially Christmas and Easter brunches. Bob was a huge sports fan, especially a New England Patriot’s fan before it was popular to do so. He loved those 1-15 Patriots’ seasons where seats at Foxboro were plenty. He loved the games and spirited times with his friends.
Bob graduated from Lesley College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1994 and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Education in 2002 from Framingham State College. He taught at Sterling Middle School in Quincy as a Science Teacher since 1994. He earned four citations from the state of Massachusetts for his excellence in teaching Middle School Science. Bob was also recognized with numerous awards from both the Massachusetts Association of Science Teachers and Quincy Public Schools. The Patriot Ledger bestowed him with the “Golden Apple Award” in 1995 and “Thanks to a Teacher Award” in 2007. Besides his family, Bob’s students and swimmers were his life and he most enjoyed seeing them learn, live and thrive during his time with them. Many have kept in touch throughout the years and hundreds have defined Mr. McGillicuddy as ‘their All-time Favorite and Most Influential Teacher/Coach’. He had an unique ability to connect with his students and swimmers through structure, motivation and love.
As swim coach, he re-invigorated the Quincy/North Quincy high school swimming and diving program amassing 61 victories in eight years. Bob was an accomplished swimmer and water polo player at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and he carried on his love for the sport to all he knew. Bob directed the Quincy Middle School Swimming and Diving Championships since the 2010 and the Championship meet annually featured over 800 students enthusiastic participants. He instituted a Learn to Swim program in the City of Quincy and brought Olympians to Quincy for stroke and technique clinics through the Fitter and Faster Swim Tour.
Bob will also be remembered for his sense of humor, generosity, helpful nature, loving attitude, painting expertise and his natural ability to be humble and kind. You called him, he was there! Bob was the first to hand out compliments, yet terrible at receiving them. He enjoyed life and especially his weekends and time at home with his family and neighbors on Donna Drive.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Bob’s Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church, 386 Hancock Street, N. Quincy on Saturday, February 11th at 10 AM. A Celebration of Life Reception will follow in the Tirrell Room, 254 Quarry Street, Quincy at 11:30 AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Bob may be made to Sterling Middle School, Community Garden Project, C/O Quincy Public Schools, 34 Coddington Street, Quincy, MA 02169.

Thank you Keohane Funeral for such comfort during this difficult time.

Dear Family,

My beloved Brother Bob began his swim to Heaven this morning.  Thoughtful and loving until the end, Bob waited until Carla finally left his side for an overdue meal and passed peacefully.  He had a single tear on the left cheek, the side where Carla had been sitting.

My Family wishes to thank you all for your caring, support and, far most of all, prayers.  We are firmly convinced that it was all the prayers, crescendoing in a 20 person prayer at a family dinner, last Friday.  Within an hour of that prayer, Bob awoke, asked for a piece of pizza, and had a week of strength, acceptance and a determination to reach out to his beloved family.

Much sadness, but more Hope for Bob.

God Bless you all,

Mary and I selected and read this passage to Bob, at his First Communion, in 1973:

"It seems strange that we all share the same life together, and yet we do.  We are all one family, because we share the same bread and the same cup of wine."

Corinthians  10:17

In recent years, Bob would have passed along the following sentiment:

"How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard."

Winnie The Pooh

Unfortunately Bob had a tough night last night and was transported to South Shore Hospital this morning and then on to MA General Hospital late this afternoon. Please pray for comfort for Bob! And please pray for strength for his family at this time. We are all here at MGH right now with Bob and we are sending our love and appreciation to all who have carried us through these toughest of days.
