The Story

We're Caelyn and Loren, we're a couple of trans folk with mental health issues and we're trying to find somewhere to live. Loren is planning to study art at York College this Autumn, but we're stuck in Peterborough and need to be out of current accommodation by the end of May.

Caelyn is on disability benefits and Loren works part-time. We struggle just to get by as it is, even without the additional expenses of moving. Based on our research, we estimate that the total up front costs, including the first month's rent, deposit and agency fees, is going to cost us at least £2200. That's more than twice our current monthly income! Any money we receive over the amount will go towards living expenses while we get on our feet, sort out housing benefit and find suitable work.

This is already a very difficult situation for us, as finding somewhere to live when you're in receipt of benefits is hard enough without the extra issues we face. If we can't get the money to move by the end of May, we're going to be homeless on top of everything else. Please help us if you can!

Fundraiser Updates

Hello all! Well, we're absolutely blown away by everyone's generosity and the sheer number of people who have been getting the word out. It's incredible and we can't thank you enough.

Since our last update, we've had to change our plans. Long story short, we're not going to be able to move to York right now. Instead, we're going to Hull until we can find our financial feet. (For anyone not aware of the UK property market, York is a very expensive area, Hull isn't.)

It was a difficult decision to make, since we're absolutely in love with York, but it's the right thing to do. We still have a whole bunch of hurdles to overcome, but they're much easier to deal with in Hull. We've been struggling to find a guarantor, since we both have very small families, but we're hoping to be able to negotiate around this.

On the bright side, Loren is currently on a train to Hull where they'll be viewing properties for the next few days. If all goes well, we'll find our new home!

Thanks again for all your help. We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for your generous support.

Much love,

Caelyn and Loren

Hey folks, it's been a couple of weeks, so I thought I'd give everyone an update.

The good news is that we made our trip up to York for Loren's college interview and they have an unconditional offer of a place in the Autumn! Loren's mum covered our travel costs and we had a really lovely time. It totally confirmed that York is where we want to live.

The bad news is that we've been told that Loren's place isn't enough of a tie to the city to qualify for any financial assistance. That means we're going to be totally reliant on this fundraiser. This also means that we're not going to qualify for social housing in York, so private renting is our only option. We've discovered that letting agent fees are going to be way more than expected. We'd estimated £300-500, but it's actually looking more like £700+. While we're desperately trying to find a private landlord, it's looking increasingly likely that we're going to have to deal with an agency.

On top of all this, we've had our monthly income cut and we're not even making ends meet, let alone able to save anything. Once we move, we're going to be much better off, which is rather ironic.

Despite the obstacles, we're in high spirits and more determined than ever to build our future together. Thank you so much for all of your help. Because of you, we're almost half way to our goal with two months to go. Please keep sharing and letting people know about our situation. You're all wonderful!

Much love,

Caelyn & Loren

Yay, we've passed the 25% mark! Thanks so much to everyone who has shared our campaign and extra special thanks to our supporters. We've still got a long way to go, so please, please keep on boosting. A really talented friend of ours is doing a live art stream in aid of our campaign, please check that out too!
