As a resident of San Francisco for almost four years I feel like I have finally developed some roots. These roots come with a responsibility geared toward the preservation of the urban environment that I call home. Did you know that our landfills are running out of space? According to SFenvironment.org, as of March 2013 the Altamont Landfill is nearing capacity, with only a 1 million ton capacity left from its original 15 million ton capacity. This alarming statistic fuels my desire to find ways to give back to my community. For this campaign, YouCaring is partnering with local artist Chris Duke, who shares my passion for finding ways to reuse objects—in surprisingly creative ways.
Duke is a local San Francisco artist who is anything but conventional. In a conscious effort to reduce crowded landfills, Duke utilizes uncommon objects for canvases like recycled windows and doors, many from historic San Francisco homes. As an artist, he defies expectations in his unique style, painting directly on the back of the glass so the art appears suspended within the door or window frame. By salvaging old materials that otherwise would sit in a landfill, Duke is creating vibrant art while also helping to preserve the beauty of the city.
San Francisco residents may recognize Duke as the local artist always sitting steadily in the hustle and bustle on a street corner to capture the different flavors of the city unraveling before his eyes. It is artists like Duke that inspire me to constantly search for new ways to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Here at YouCaring we are partnering with Duke to bring attention to a noteworthy Bay Area nonprofit, Building REsources, which praises and promotes sustainability. The nonprofit’s mission is to develop efficient ways to recycle, which simultaneously saves the city money on disposal costs by diverting materials from being placed in landfills. With sustainability in mind, this nonprofit is eager to discover new ways to recycle.
Duke has happily agreed to donate a portion of his proceeds to this cause because he heavily advocates for sustainability. For the duration of our fundraising campaign, several of Duke’s colorful works are gracing a wall of our San Francisco office. Help us spread the word about the importance of recycling by donating to Building REsources today! All proceeds from this campaign go directly to the local non-profit Building REsources.
