For ten days over the end of April and into May 2017, a dedicated pediatric team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, intensivists and nurses from Maine Medical Center will embark on a trip to Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya. In that short time our group will perform 10 open heart surgeries on pediatric patients spearheaded by the cardiac surgeon Dr Reed Quinn and perfusionist Bob Groom.
Each of these fragile patients will return to a makeshift pediatric intensive care staffed 24hrs a day by nurses and doctors donating their time and expertise from Maine Medical Center.
This can only be done with the very generous donations of Emirates Airlines and Samaritan's Purse and help from Tenwek Hospital. However, not all expenses are paid and the ICU team still needed to find $5000 to help cover transport, food, accommodation and licencing. (Update) Through the amazingly generous donations of patients, friends, family and completely altruistic strangers, we have all but achieved this initial goal. However, you haven't missed your chance to help. We have raised the cap on our drive to $8000 and any extra donations we receive above the costs of licencing and visas will be put towards medication, equipment and toys for the children and their families. We are so humbled by all of your help. It truly is an honor to do this work.
Thank you so much for considering adding to this mission. We, and the children of Kenya, thank you.
