The Story

For 5-year-old Layla Mosley, it’s always "no biggie." This is a saying Layla made up during her chemotherapy treatments that spread through the halls of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Nurses, doctors, and other children are inspired to be brave by the saying- and there’s even a handshake to match.

On February 4th 2016, Layla went in for an ultrasound for stomach pains. After additional testing, doctors determined that she has Ewing Sarcoma (a rare bone cancer). Layla's parents, Brenda and Keith, did all the research they could about her illness and tried to do everything possible to make sure she was happy, safe and loved.

Despite her chemotherapy, Layla is a very active child who enjoys princess movies, musicals, Chinese food, and horse riding. One of her current favorite movies is Frozen. The voice-characters who played Kristoff and Sven even sang her a special song over the phone, to which she now knows every word. But Layla's ability to nurture is her most distinctive characteristic. Her mother calls her the "2 year old whisperer" because of her connection with her younger sister and younger friends in the hospital. She loves to take care of her younger sister, Lily, and has always been a great friend and role model for her.

Layla's love, compassion, and bravery doesn't end there. She wants to help other kids with cancer when she grows up by becoming a child life specialist. "Who's better than someone who's already been through it?" She asks. She wants to motivate and comfort the children in the hospital by helping them understand their illnesses. Whether it’s with a "no biggie" handshake, sharing a toy, or a scooter race, she always knows how to brighten someone’s day. With eight more rounds of chemotherapy ahead of her, Layla and her parents are amazed by the support everyone has shown for her thus far, and for all the continuous encouragement and love.

Layla's latest scans showed no evidence of disease! She is, for now, cancer free!! She is also nearing the end of her chemotherapy! She has two rounds left, a total of 6 days, and then she will move on to radiation. Her whole family is ready to move on from chemo, but the idea of radiation and moving into uncharted waters causes more than a little anxiety. Layla will receive 10 radiation treatments, for 10 days in a row (besides Sat and Sun) and should be finished right before Thanksgiving. Layla is looking forward to being finished before the holidays!

Once radiation is complete, Layla will move into the maintenance phase of treatment where she will continue to receive an experimental new drug that is part of her clinical trial for 6 months. No one really knows what sort of side effects she will continue to experience during this part of treatment, but Layla is definitely hoping that it doesn't stop her hair from growing back! She is already picking out hair clips and planning on dying her hair all sorts of fun colors. She will continue to have scans every three months to check for a recurrence, which unfortunately, is still very likely. But for now, Layla is enjoying Kindergarten and being able to spend more time at home with her sister very soon!

Layla had surgery last Wednesday and the surgeons were very happy with how it went. They ended up removing a few pieces of her ribs, some muscle, and the remaining tumor. Although in a lot of pain, she was recovering well and went home on Friday. Unfortunately, she ended up in the emergency room over the weekend after spiking a high fever. An X-ray revealed that she has developed pneumonia around the surgical site. She spent a day and night in the hospital, receiving strong IV medications, and she is once again home continuing to heal from surgery and pneumonia. Her next phase of treatment, 8 more rounds of chemo, is set to begin on Monday June, 13.

Since the last update, Layla has continued to fight and is kicking cancers butt! Her latest scan has revealed incredible progress. On June 2nd, Layla will have surgery to remove more of the cancer and some of her ribs where it all started. After that she will continue chemo, which she has been handling like a super star! Thank you to all those continuing to send thoughts and prayers and support in every way possible.
