The Story

My mother died in her early thirties from breast cancer. I was 3 years old. In 2015, at the age of 38, I got tested for the genetic mutation, BRCA. A BRCA mutation predisposes a woman to very elevated risks of breast and ovarian cancer. My results came back positive. This mutation, plus my family history, placed me at extremely high risk of developing aggressive - and potentially fatal - breast and ovarian cancer.

With the guidance of Andrea and Dr. Rachel Brem, of the Brem Foundation, I decided to take my future into my own hands. With the support of my family and friends, I had an oophorectomy and a double mastectomy with reconstruction. I had three major surgeries, spent five days in the Intensive Care Unit, and needed to recover for 12 weeks at home. It took a physical and emotional toll on me and those I love.

Today, a year after my last surgery, I am healed and feel great! I no longer have the dark cloud of cancer hanging over my head and I can focus on the people and things I love. I have decided to make the most of my newfound health and body. In honor of my 40th birthday (October) and the second anniversary of my double mastectomy (February), I will be running the Disney Princess Half Marathon in February 2018.

But I am not only running for myself. I have teamed up with the Brem Foundation (BREM) to raise awareness and money for breast cancer prevention and early detection. The Brem Foundation maximizes every woman's chances of finding an early curable breast cancer through education, access for low-income women, and physician-training.

I would be honored for you to consider sponsoring my run - 100% of donations will go directly to BREM - so fewer children lose their mothers, like I did. I started my slow and steady training in mid-March, using a couch to 5k plan. As I progress in my training, I will give updates.

Thank you for you so much for your support. Together we will makes strides towards a world where breast cancer takes no more lives.

Please consider helping me reach my fundraising goal as I train for a half-marathon in February. 100% of donations will go to the Brem Foundation to promote early detection of breast cancer!

I am excited to share the latest 13th update (a day early). My always-supportive husband and partner sent a beautifully worded email this week to all of his personal and professional contacts asking them to contribute to my fundraising campaign. His request has already raised $5,000.    I cannot express what his and all of your support means to me as I train for the big race.

We are now only 45 days from the race. Last night I did an 8-mile training run and your support is what keeps me going. Thank you!
