Who we are:
Built on a foundation of reproductive justice, Boston Abortion Support Collective (BASC) is the only abortion support system in Massachusetts. We provide free, compassionate and empowering support to people experiencing abortion. We are a shoulder to cry on, a friend to laugh with, an ear to listen, a pair of hands to help out. We are witness to reproductive experiences and we are warmth and connection in a world that can be cold and silent around abortion. Although we’re based in Boston, we service requests from the whole state, including support of patients who come to Massachusetts from other states.
Why are we raising $5,000?
- $3,500 will go towards ride support to ensure clients can get safe transport to and from the clinic. Oftentimes clients are forbidden from getting their procedures unless they have an escort and a ride to and from the clinic, which we can provide. Our volunteers also provide the necessary emotional support before, after, and sometimes during the procedure, from passing the protesters at the clinic entrance to recovering on the ride home. The money will go towards gas expenses or public transit for the client and the volunteer, and will last us a full year.
- The rest of the funds will be put towards towards hosting more abortion support trainings for new volunteers (about $800), and replenishing our stock of support materials for clients (about $200). These materials include tea, hot and cold packs, and ibuprofen. We recognize that stocking support materials is a financial weight for some of our volunteers and we would like to alleviate that. In our commitment to be a class-conscious collective, we have also started providing $20 stipends to volunteers who otherwise could not take time off work to support a client, and the last $500 will go towards these stipends.
Given the current political climate’s impact on abortion access, and its messaging around abortion and bodily rights, the number of requests for support continues to increase. More groups are asking us to host trainings on abortion support, and more volunteers are joining our numbers. Our reach is spreading, but we are limited by our finances.
