There are a lot of specialized crowdfunding platforms out there, for everything from launching businesses to inventing products and completing creative projects. Among these platforms, the standard business model involves taking a percentage of all the funds you raise, typically 10% or more. There may also be a minefield of fees to navigate, including penalties for not reaching fundraising goals. But other crowdfunding platforms support more personal goals.
YouCaring’s free Compassionate Crowdfunding™ platform helps individuals, groups, and organizations raise funds to face some of life’s biggest and most inspiring challenges—including personal and medical emergencies, natural disaster relief, humanitarian projects, school and community improvements, and more. To date, people have raised more than $1 billion on our free platform, and we haven’t taken a penny of those funds for ourselves.
Who can raise funds on YouCaring?
YouCaring is for people just like you. Every day, they’re raising funds to face hardship or help others in need through direct donations. They’re gathering support for medical expenses, memorials and funerals, adoption, kids and family expenses, school and college tuition, neighborhood and community projects, sports teams, veterinary care, veteran support, and many other purposes.
People also use YouCaring to raise funds for causes they believe in. While fundraising for a charitable cause can happen in any category on our site, it’s most often seen in emergencies and disaster relief, school fundraising, volunteer and service projects, mission trips, and support for nonprofit organizations.
And our crowdfunding community includes fundraisers and donors from around the world. If you live anywhere WePay and PayPal allow transactions, you can start a fundraiser on YouCaring. (Find out more on choosing a payment processor for your fundraiser.)
Who can’t raise funds on YouCaring?
YouCaring isn’t for people looking to grant an equity stake or interest in an enterprise to those who donate. Our campaigns aren’t set up for you to offer products, services, or other material incentives to donors. Instead, our platform is for donation-based crowdfunding.
We believe in the principle that all people are entitled to a fair trial. This being said, in keeping with our principle of preserving harmony, we do not support fundraising for legal defense of a defendant who is charged with a violent crime or who is charged with a crime in which there is a significant financial impact to the victim(s). Any campaign that includes fundraising for such causes will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and may be disallowed; see our Terms of Service for more information.
A brief overview of crowdfunding models
There are three main crowdfunding models:
YouCaring is a donation-based crowdfunding platform. It’s clear to donors that the money they give through such platforms is a donation to someone’s personal or charitable cause. The rewards are intrinsic—help for those who need it, and the satisfaction of making life better for the recipients. On these sites, campaign pages for personal causes often become supportive communities that offer encouragement and resources throughout the campaign and even beyond—groups and organizations often emerge from them, dedicated to doing good long beyond a campaign’s end.
Rewards-based crowdfunding platforms entice supporters with increasingly valuable material rewards in exchange for payments or subscriptions. Rewards for campaigns on these sites include beta versions of new products, special edition artwork, unique in-person experiences, and other such perks. Typically, the greater the amount given, the greater the material value of the reward.
Interest and equity crowdfunding platforms allow anyone to invest in an enterprise. Platforms that facilitate these kinds of transactions must integrate complex legal contracts into the process. On these platforms, the parties raising funds are directly giving less than they might in more traditional investment structures. Instead, in exchange for investments, they may offer incentives such as equity in a new business or agency fees.
