February is American Heart Month, with many events to raise awareness about heart health issues. And today is National Wear Red Day to honor the Go Red for Women effort that focuses on women’s heart health.
Great progress in making healthy lifestyle changes has occurred since Wear Red Day was first held in 2003, including:
- Death in women has decreased by more than 30 percent over the past 10 years.
- More than one-third have lost weight.
- More than 50 percent have increased their exercise.
- 6 out of 10 have changed their diets.
- More than 40 percent have checked their cholesterol levels.
- Today, nearly 300 fewer women die from heart disease and stroke each day.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for men and women in America. For education and activities to encourage prevention, detection and treatment of heart conditions, visit the American Heart Association, World Heart Federation and Healthfinder websites.
